Decided at the weekend the Monster has to go - ghastly thing; big mistake; everything you've ever heard about italian bikes true; etc

Thing is, what do I replace it with?

Not keen to do the supersport thing again & want reliability, character & versatility. The BMW R1150GS springs to mind - views?

have a go on a GS - I think you'll be impressed! Bracken (SE london) are probably your best bet. Or if you fancy a junior, more hoonable version, try a KTM Duke!

You might as well get the new R1200GS. By all accounts a big improvement on the 1150.

agreed. although the 1200GS is a better bike, the residuals are monstrous. Most dealers have sold their 2004 allocations already, despite the bike only being 'officially' launched in the UK last weekend! If you get a well looked after, you may be able to trade almost sideways from a late, tidy monster (assuming it's not a 600) onto one of these! Otherwise, I reckon you'd need to inject around 2-3k.

Gotta be a Tiger innit.

compared to the GS it's sportier, smoother, handles better and isn't German, cheaper too.

Not into the British bike thing - its an odd quirk I know but when it comes to petrol I'm all for the axis powers

Harumph !

If you're thinking the Bloor triumphs are like the brit bikes of old then they're not. They don't leak for a start, are fairly reliable and are much better than their germanic opposition (contrary to what BMW et al will tell you)

Plus they have proper indicator switches.

Nothing wrong with the concept - in fact I sometimes rather liked it. The main issues were around the expectation gap, given that it followed a 1999 'blade (albeit with a major 'off' between) and the fact that it doesn't like not getting used pretty infrequently - I could leave the Honda for literally months and it would still start and run with no problems; the Monster doesn't like being left for a week.

If Mrs I wants a red 1998 Monster with 1300 miles, 2 owners and full history from new, give me a mail off-line

In your opinion.

Try loading up the Duke with luggage..

Tiger beats it hands down for an all-rounder......

Can only respond by saying the Duke can carry everything I'd want it to, and carrying capacity is not the only thing I look for in an allrounder.

fair enough, but my point is that there is more than one bike to choose from if you don't want a sportbike.

What's the seat like on the Uglystrada then, doesn't look like it'd be comfy for more than a hour.

* and I may have to admit to looking into getting one a while back
