The MOT is going to be due next month on the 2 stroke screamer and it'll be a first for me MOTing a bike, I imagine it's very similar to the car test, but is there anything I should be aware of before I book it in, things to check to save me the re-test hassle, etc, etc.
How much bodging can you have on the bike and still pass, the exhaust is held together with a combination of dodgy welding and Gun Gum paste but it doesn't blow, and one of the indicators is a work of art, the orange lens fell off, never to be seen again, and when I was walking to the chip shop later that day I noticed the aftermath of a car coming together so a broken car indicator lens a hacksaw and a bit of gaffer tape later, problem solved but will this pass

I suspect you will have more trouble with the broken indicator, if its all held together with tape. For the price of a new one its not worth messing around with trying to mend it.
I suspect you may have more luck with the exhaust, judging by my experience with my last bike. I bodged that with a bean can cut to shape and bolted over the hole, then sprayed black to match the rest of the zorst. As long as the bodge isn't in an obvious place and it isn't blowing, you may be lucky.

My only problem is getting hold of bits, when I phoned up for a new exhaust recently I was told the importer had one on back order from last April and still have no idea when they are going to see it
Think I'll try and get a new lens though it does look a bit rough and it's not going to help when I try and sell it

Try looking on ebay... you'll pick one up for nowt.

MOT - just think safety:
lights
horn
brakes
suspension
bearings (i.e head & wheel)
tyres
controls, etc

all fairly simple stuff to check your self. You shouldn't have a problem unless you are into rat bikes or ride a sh1tter...

Cant you get an aftermarket set of indicators that fit?

S'pose I could, but the indicator isn't as hard to get as the exhaust, I think it's because it's shared with the Mito and the Planet theres a few more of the indicators knocking about, I just like the gaffer tape special look

legally, as long as you don't have any indicator switch gear, you can get away with not having any indicators. Common sense assumes this only applies to daytime only MoTs (as per lots of converted crossers).

Bugger, turns out even the bloody indicators are special, no stock of the £5 lens, and no idea when they will get any, they have been on back order since July, all they can sell me is a complete unit at £20
Looks like it's going to be some aftermarket jobbies then, but the wiring to them looks like a complete nightmare
Anyone got any links to cheap bike tyre dealers, but knowing my luck at the moment even the tyres will be dodgy sizes :mechanic sucking of teeth: that'll cost me more than my car tyres

Surely indicators have two wires going into the back - a +ve and a -ve ?? Just test the wires with a multimeter - one will show voltage, the other one - bobs yer uncle!

I think they have bullet connectors on them, it's just they are a bitch to get off as everything is rusted up and the wires dissappear into a knuckle scraping grubby hole which is covered in muck from the back wheel, a new indicator lens would have took all of 5 seconds to fit as it just pushes on, but this looks it's going to take the best part of a Saturday afternoon to fit

Cant you buy the complete unit for £20 and then remove the lens, and just fit that to your bike?

S'pose I could but the tight arse in me wonders what I'm going to do with £15 'scrap' bit I'm left with
I've already asked them if they'll split it but they didn't want to be stuck with the other bit either

I'm planning on changing bike soon, and a Ducati Monster was on the short list, but after this nightmare with Italian parts I think I'll play it safe and go Jap
Incidently the place I'm trying for my bits, the importer, also does Ducati and he tried cross referencing to the Ducati parts as they are cheaper

Hmmm, i love the looks of the Monster!

Just keep the extra housing as a spare - think of it this way - you either spend hours fitting the whole thing, with no advantage, or you just fit the lens and decide that the couple of quid you spent on the housing is worth writing off as you then get to spend a whole weekend afternoon doing something youd rather do.

Thinking laterally for a minute, you don't actually need indicators on the bike to pass your MOT. However, if indicators are fitted then they must work.
So if you take all the indicators off you'll get through

Nige,

If you remove the indicators, you also need to remove all the switchgear from the clip-on....
