Hey guys,

What are the restrictions for a 22 year old? My intention is to take my test in the next few months and hop straight onto a Suzy Bandit 600 - IIRC i can ride pretty much anything once over 21, so i should be ok?

Cheers

Once you have done your CBT (which you will have to do) you will be allowed to ride up to 125cc unaccopmanied and with L plates displayed, or you can do Direct Access, which is a course where you train on a machine of at least 47 BHP (CC doesn't come into it) under qualified supervision/instruction, and then when you have passed your test on this larger machine you will be licenced to ride whatever your hearts desire or your pocket can afford.

Thanks TC. So do i have to do:

Theory

then CBT

then Direct Access

??

Thats gonna work out mighty expensive! I was hoping the CBT was included in the 4 day Direct Access course!

Ive also heard a rumour on here that Direct Access might be getting banned - is there truth in that rumour, and if so, how long do i have to get licensed up?!

Cheers

Yes, I think its 21 as well, so at 22 your can go straight out on a ducati after a direct access if you wish.

The first thing you will have to do is a CBT.

Many schools do all inclusive courses which incorporates your CBT as part of a 4 or 5 day course. Some will include a booking for the theory test if required, but you do not have to do it before CBT, however it must be passed before you take the practical test.

An average price for an all in course (CBT, Training and test using a school bike) will range from £450 - £600, but it is best to shop around and see who offers the best package.

A review of all motorcycle training starts in June or thereabouts, and DAS is a subject that will come under scrutiny. I am on the review committee, and it is ceratinly something I will be raising, but it will be at least two years before any further changes come about.

Must admit that I found it quite worrying that I could sign up for my Direct Access, and providing I passed it all I could go from a pushbike to a fireblade in a week the only limiting factor being highish insurance but compared to trying to insure a supercar the day after passing your car test it would have been affordable and the bikes themself are peanuts (compared to a car with the same performance)
I actually coose to limit myself to a 125 for a year to learn how to handle this 2 wheel lark, and with a month to go I've not been down the road on my backside yet
looks around for something woody to touch faced with a ride home in the wet with an exhaust that gives me no power over 7000rpm and sounds like a tractor

Very helpful TC, thanks.

Raceboy - well im just daft so i wanna jump on a pukka nutter-b@stard speed machine straight away I agree its quite astounding - especially when insurance is only a bit over £500!
