forwarded from my co-mod over at www.tigerlist.org

For anyone who may not know, Trailriding in the UK is getting very close
to being outlawed. I've created a 'campaign' website detailing the problem & proposed legislation, along with example objection letters.

Can I please urge all the Brits to take a look, and spend some time firing a few letters off to their MP, DEFRA, and anyone else listed in the 'Urgent Action' section.

The URL is www.muddystuff.co.uk/campaign

Many thanks, Preston

The farm I live on has a public foot path right through the middle and we used to get illegal trail riders burning through our stables area causing all sorts of mayhem, i realize it's these chaps who spoil it for everyone and it's a shame this law may be passed, myself included as i enjoy a good rip around the woods!

On the upside we're thinking about opening our woods up for trail riding, it's about 6-7 acres and feature heavy, probably charge a few quid for maintenance...that way we get to control who goes where and keeps everyone happy, including the ramblers!

Trouble is many of these ramblers associations are local village types (def. where I live) with heavy contacts in the local authorities...so whether it's right or not I suspect the law will be passed anyway.

Bloody good idea. If you allow the ramblers to do their thing, you can make a good (smallish) course around the designated footpath area. The law says nothing about them getting covered in rooster trails!

I'd be happy to chip in a tenner or so for an afternoon's hooning.

Collecting the 04 CRF450 in 3 weeks. Can't wait!

i'm just outside cantebury in the sticks. Perhaps I'll organise a weekend when y'all can come and take a peek. I'm trail bike-less at the moment opting for my road goer, but i would think about getting another if there was an active group local - this may even help the cause...

Sign me up aswell Blatch I'm in NW Kent, pos problem though is if you charge I think you'll need planning permission for change of use, this will no doubt lead to objections from the ramblers and scupper the whole idea, if however its you and a few "mates" they can go whistle as its your land and not for profit so no need for planning. Oh yes I'll be on a 53 XR400

well if we get enough people I'm sure we could organise a day in the summer; that way my sis won't complain about the ground being torn up for her big dogs (or horses as she calls them)...

Have not been on a trail bike for some years so it should be pretty interesting; i'll use the quad methinks.

Mel,

As you point out, I think as long as there is no 'commercial use' being made out of the land - in terms of change of use permission being granted - I think you're safe. We would just need to be sensible if there were 'ramblers' on the land at the time.... IMHO...

The 'charge' could in effect be a parking fee to park your car/van at the farm....

The BMF are onto this as well folks, they have sent out example letters to clubs for sending to MPs etc.

We need to fight this

...i think the first few times people come down we won't charge anything, it'll be a test-run to see how it all goes. If all does go well and some sort of community is formed then i would think about a parking charge or "gifting".

Could even contribute part of the money taken to the local ramblers association charity? Or to preserving byways etc. thus killing two birds with one stone; this may soften some of the bad feeling between the two groups locally.

Whats the deal with road legal quad bikes, are these subject to the same restrictions as trail?

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that all trial riding done on PUBLIC (i.e not private) land had to be done on road legal machines - not so much out of the legaility of the machine for road use, but of the requirement to have some form of 3rd party ins cover in case you hit anyone (with the bike). My forthcoming CRF450 will have a daytime only MOT so I can then register it as a road bike. It'll then be totally legal for travelling on the bits of road between trails, etc.

As I see it, as your land is totally private, with a public right of way through it, it won't matter if your quad is road legal or not.

My opinion may of course be completely misguided.... Someone in the TRF should know the answer - give them a bell.

no not on my land, i was wondering if the same laws applied if i were to go off my land onto the public pathways elsewhere...basically are quad bikes affected by this same proposed law?

Yes !
Must be road legal to use a public right of way and if it is not a public right of way and it is not your land, you shouldn't be there !

I've got to admit we've had more trouble from 'ramblers' than anyone else. Sometimes we get rubbish left in the yard, or complaints about our dogs running around because it scares them. We're not even allowed to put up "beware of the dog" signs as it implies a dangerous animal is on the prowl! Sometimes in the summer ramblers expect a drink of some sort as well which is always interesting.

But I suppose we've just been unlucky as this is normally the minority, most walkers who come through are perfectly polite and courteous, so I don't mean to bad mouth any ramblers out there!

Any chance you could elaborate on that one please? The reason i ask, is im tempted to get my old KL250 road legal - so im wondering how much of the broken stuff i need to fix! lol it currently has no lights of any kind, mirrors, no speedo or tacho and it smokes like a goodun!
