Whats the deal with areas we can ride off road? I know we're allowed to ride on Byways, but are Bridleways out of bounds?

Most emphatically, yes, out of bounds !

Bridleways allow right of passage for pedestrians and horses with a special ammendment addded in 1968 to enable pushbike use.

Some bridleways are also unclassified roads and as such are known as 'dual status'. In the past it has been generally accepted that motor vehicles may use dual status routes but there was a recent case in Derbyshire where 4x4 drivers were prosecuted for using such a route on the basis that on the definitive map it was shown as bridleway.

At the moment you are entitled to ride byways open to all traffic (BOAT), Unclassified County Roads (UCR) and Roads Used as Public Paths (RUPP) - the latter only if you can prove in court that that particular lane carries vehicular rights.

The governement is on a crusade to ban motor vehicles from unsurfaced roads so please get acquainted with the proposals, join the TRF www.trf.org.uk and write to your MP and the Environment Minister, Alun Michael.

Before long there will be nowhere to ride

'Green lanes' are getting hard to find, and the use of motocross bikes (rather than enduro or trail bikes) on these doesn't help the public perception of trail riders. simple things like engine off for horses, not going down lanes flat in 5th, etc. make life easier. There are several groups currently trying to lobby parliament to stop the closure or reclassification of many of the RUPPs, BOATs and other (currently) non-restricted ROWs with vehicular access. Soon you may only be able to use motoX tracks or private land for enduros or hare n hounds, etc....

The police crack down hard on people they think are abusing the system. Please bear in mind ins & tax are needed for green laning....

I think the greenlaning rule baning motor vehicles from Boat/Rupps will go through.Their are so many ramblers/horse riders hellbent on baning it.I used to trail ride a couple of years ago and the abuse you get is incredible(even if you stop and switch the engine off)The hare and hounds/enduro racing sounds intresting but clubs doing this are getting thin on the ground apart from wales as i know to.motocross clubs where losing tracks 2-3 years ago cause busybodies on the local councils where complaing about the noise
