I might be contemplating going to this next year as part of a birthday treat.

I'b be grateful if anybody who has been has any tips about recommended accomodation, ticket booking etc & best place on the circuit to watch.

It's first time to Italy & we'll probably fly to save time etc. I think Bologna nearest airport ??

Might stay over for a few days & visit the area or nearest coast but would like to make it as trouble free as poss without getting stuff wrong so all info greatly welcome.

+1 My daughter is a mad Moto GP & Vale' fan. She will be at Uni in Pisa from Feb 2010 and we have agreed that it would be great if we can visit that round

From the wall on the outside of start finish on way to podium ceremony . . . There were scootrs, bikes, leaf blowers, the works on the circuit - Note the huge 46 being carried down.

Didn't focus on photography whilst I was there, but here's another from the opening laps (2007)

From Rossi Hill with all the fans with the cardboard signs issued by the club just before race start . .

We drove down for the fun of it as there were 4 of us on the trip. We camped very close to the circuit and then drove to within 1 mile of the circuit and walked in from there, saved a lot of queuing after the race. We went on Saturday and Sunday and I'd advise if you can to do the same as it means you get a day to suss it out . . .

You can only camp in the circuit if you're in a motorhome. There are loads of campsites suggested around the area.

We watched the race from Rossi Hill (Savognia?) and it's as special as you imagine it is. Although HAVE TO stand at the start of the braking zone for turn 1, you can't hear yourself thinking, let alone talking. You can get within 15m of 200+mph . . . it's stunning.

I'm in a bit of a hurry right now, but I promise tomorrow I'll show you where we camped, parked and stood via Google maps.

Remember you are also within 25miles of Florence, so you can tie in a great weekend there as well . . .

Thanks Johno. Look forward to more.
I might do the luxury of proper accomodation as it's me birthday biggrin:- but camping nearby sounds easier etc. Hope to do all 3 days too.

I was thinking about doing this last year, but coming from Scotland two-up kind put the Wife off!!!
I definetly fancy the idea of camping near-by though, i guess doing that you'd miss all the traffic getting into and then out off the track??
How far is it from the nearest Airport??

To look at the circuit, then search for it on Google maps as Mugello. The main entrance is top left, you can see the road I name later on and work out where Rossi hill is on the outside of Casanova.

We bought our tickets from the circuit direct, who use an Italian agency called Ticket One to administer the sales. We bought open field tickets and didn't bother going for g/s tickets as the topography of the circuit means there are loads of great places to watch from, also we didn't want to be pinned down in one place. Monza was different, as it less easy to get to the circuit for example. I think our tickets were about 75-80 euros, but the conversion was more favorable then .. Assen 2yrs ago was 69euro for grandstand tickets on race day only for example.

The website has been updated a lot since we went and the accomodation search has been improved, we found our campsite through the circuit site last time. I can't comment on hotels etc, but you want to be looking in Borgo San Lorenzo to be closest.

Don't forget about Florence though, it is only 21miles away and is a stunning city. We drove in for Saturday evening after qualifying for dinner and a wander, takes no time at all. Although, obviously the cost of accomodation will be higher and the traffic getting back out will be harder on Sunday morning.

We parked on Via Bruno Bouzzi, which runs south of the circuit, stuffed on the side of the road. Much like all circuits, near the main entrance the fields are turned into make shift camping/parking. They looked like carnage to us and that's why we chose to do the 2km walk in the morning rather than fight our way in and out (it was wet on the Saturday so fields became quagmires), I'd really recommend it as we skipped queuing off the field and then just got into the queue to get away.

Walking - Mugello is really hilly, if you do walk round the circuit be prepared for sore feet and being knackered, the pictures on the TV really do not do it justice.

Camping - 15 Italian lads, 1 motorhome (only way in unless on a bike I think...), loads of beer, loads of other accelerants, park it on the wet, muddy slopes, get out, get really drunk, set fire to scooter as a garden ornament and repeat for 3days . . . Or use one the nice family orientated sites within 3-4miles with a restaurant and chill out in the evenings smile

Toilets - squat and shot which acts as a shower as well . . . not cleaned, in a right state was our experience. See above for reason why they're not in a great state.

Merchandise - we had to hunt for a GP T shirt and that was near the pits, we didn't go all the way down the back of the pits though so there may be more.

Food - varied . . think bread and ham, maybe a sausage if you're lucky. Not my greatest Italian circuit food experience and not much of it.

Atmosphere - I've not been anywhere else that came close, they are nuts, welcoming, nuts, loud, welcoming and passionate about their racing. There was none of the shameful behaviour we see from British fans towards Stoner or other competitors. The jeer them during the race, the cheer for their hero's and then come the end they applaud everyone.

844 miles from Calais and the chance to go Grimsel, Furka, St Gotthard and Susten passes on the way there or back - Stelvio is a tick box pass, if you're pressed for time then do the previously named and don't bother going out of your way for Stelvio. Take in Milan on the way 180 miles away, Bologna 40 mies away . .. There's a wide choice of ways to do the trip. Fly drive into Milan or Bologna, but get your flights booked early wink

If were to go again, I'd probably drive again (sorry, I don't ride). We took 2 days going down and it was just right, same coming back. 6 days in total, but it was a great laugh. I'd probably make an excuse of it like next year and do a 10 day tour taking in Switzerland etc getting there. . .

Eight of us did it in 07. Best GP atmosphere ever. Bought tickets from Big Rock and stayed in Florence for a couple of nights. The track invasion was mental. Piagio Ape 3 wheeler in Rossi Colours with mega exhaust going round on Two wheels. Four blokes with a gazebo on the track. Blokes chiseling souvenirs out of the curb stones - Truly mental!

Cheers for the links and info!

Doing Mugello has somehow not happened for me in last couple of years so its in the mix for next year before Rossi buggers off.

3 day boys trip down there thru France, pick up wives from Florence airport, pillion for a couple of days to and from GP before back to the airport for girlies to have comfy trip home and back again through Italia and France - sounds good (and expensive as per normal!).

P.S. Do you really need to book tickets in advance?? I've turned up to Valenicia's season ender before on the Friday morning and got stunning grandstand seats (front row, end of pitlane) and that was allegedley sold out. Same thing at Laguna and Phillip Island. I've got a slight phobia about buying advance tickets for some reason!

It's a gamble, although someone posted on here last year or earlier this year that he couldn't buy a Saturday only ticket at Mugello and there was a distraught picture of him outside the main gate as he only had the one day pass from the other half from the family holiday as I remember it. . .

We got em, that way we knew we had em, we didn't have to sort out with mad Italians on the day and didn't risk a 2k mile road trip and then not getting in . . just reduces the grief. I don't mind buying advance tickets as long as i'm getting them through a source where i'm not paying way over the odd's. Also prefer to pay directly to the circuits than agents as ultimately I want them to make the money, not some group buying agent.

Just checked www.gotomotogp.com and tickets are already on sale with them . .

http://www.gotomotogp.com/index.asp?pageid=WWW_MOT...

General admission for all 3 days is €142 with them, but i would wait for the Ticket One link through the Mugello circuit website to check pricing. Grandstands starting at €208 at Poggio Secco which is the Rossi hill area . .

Not cheap with the current conversion, but worth every penny (cent) of the price.

I have been 3 times and we always fly to a city mid week ( Rome last time ) , do some sight seeing then get a car to drive to the circuit. ( we then leave the car at another city airport }
We stay at Barbarino de Mugello , about 20 miles from the circuit, arriving on the Thursday , a B& B on a farm , great value .

We go out that day to one of the many ticket wagons which will be parked by the roadside and pre piurchase tickets from them at face value.

I wouldnt buy a grandstand ticket either , its a natural amphitheatre and the views are excellent , especially from " Rossi Hill "

Dont make plans to be away from the circuit quickly , it will not happen .

We are giving Mugello a rest now and will try San Marino this year

I did Misano a few years ago for the WSB when Hodgson won the title. Great circuit and atmosphere.

Although I rode their, you can fly into Ancona. We stayed in Rimini, good for the evenings and was only 30 mins on the bike

See you there . . . We're probably staying in Rimini as per Fleegle, although we're touring down in and then following the Mille Miglia route to Rome and then home . .

Can't see the pic, take it that means your driving down in the TVR, fancy hooning around on the way down there with a Ducati?

I can make this one and my mates are only doing the TT this year, I want to go to a Moto GP round rather badly!
