I'm toying with getting a ZX7R to replace my ZXR400 (it was stolen and recovered and now I don't love it like I used to).

Has anyone here had one? Anything in particular I should look for (ex-race bikes and bikes stupidly not painted green)?

Sorry to haer about the 400 as well , As BadApple said check for rotten down pipes and collector box , saggy rear shock, and make sure it has carb heaters (a good way of knowing your getting a UK bike)

Oh man, sorry about the 400, the ZX7R is a cracking bike , check all previosly mentioned.

What year are you thinking, go for a P model, best from P4 onwards, i've had a couple and i still use one for a track bike (P6) who says GSXR1000's are the quickest.

Best front stock suspension setup on a sportsike by far.

Best of luck finding a good un, there's loads of crap ones out there.

I used to have one (P2).
Can't say a bad word against it, but check you can get on with the riding position. I found that the footpegs were to far forwards & caused cramp in my calf muscles. If I'd kept the bike I suppose rearsets would have cured this.
If you get one go straight out & buy a full Akrapovic exhaust system for it. IIRC it added 16bhp peak & 20bhp midrange to mine, also weighs a hell of a lot less than the standard system. Sounds sublime too!

ditto the exhaust idea (thanx for the cheapy leadfoot), but if fitting a full akrapovic system then just make sure the lugg for the springs underneath don't penetrate ur sump, this was a design fault on the 7r easily modified with a pair of pliers, otherwise oil on rear tyre @ 100mph + is not funny, other than that i'd say it's the best hadling bike i have ever owned R1s gixer 1000 inc.

enjoy!

Yep get one they're great.

I had two on the road a P2 and then a P5 plus a N2 7RR on the track which I've still got and use as a track day toy. As far as the exhaust idea goes I nearly agree but having spent hours on a dyno actually developing the race can for them with Renegade who were one of my sponsors the "full" system quote is frankly bollox, the standard manifold is as good and in many cases better than the aftermarket ones avaliable its only fault being its often heavier, the extra power is only ever realised by a slip on can. We dynoed standard, Akropovic and Micron manifolds with dozens of different combinations and designs of end can and not once found that any manifold gave any noticable advantage, only the end cans made a difference. As for weak points watch the valves as standard they have a fabricated valve using three pieces fused togeather and these are prone to bend or snap which will often right off the top half of the engine at the very least, if your going to use it in anger at all replace them with kit or single piece valves. Apart from that they are bomb proof and very very stable, and safe to tune upto 125/130 bhp ish keeping reliability.

Cheers everyone - I'm going to look at three ZX7Rs tomorrow.

BTW the coppers know who nicked the ZXR400 because they went round and asked for it back.
The next morning there it was, undamaged, round the corner. No evidence so no charges. It's bloody frustrating and now my insurance company are getting moody with me. I also had to shell out 140 quid for the police to recover the bike for SOCO to fingerprint in a nice dry shed.

Hey there, congrats on your purchase!! one of the best bikes ever made IMHO.... I had one of the first ones (P1) Spent a small fortune on it too... the best money I spent was taking it to the Kawasaki God of tuning (Ray Stringer) who fettled it to perfection, the front end was set up by Hans Rinner (Hyperpro/WP Suspension dude). One of my all time favourite rides!!
Check out this months Fast Bikes for a reader special.

Here's mine before I sold it...

Haha, are those wheels resprayed pink?
