Well I have a four stroke scooter which came new with 10w/40w mineral oil in it although the specification is to use a sythetic 5w/40. I tried the synthetic route and it caused the clutch to slip so I changed it back.

Has anyone had similar experiences? What oil do YOU use?

If you have a high power / modified bike, this often happens unless you can modify the clutch pressure plate. Also, OEM clutch plates often work a lot better than aftermarket 'race' type clutch plates (which are also a waste of cash). It's often the basket that's the weak point, not the pressure plates...

Change the oil to a semi-synth, or even a mineral oil for a bit to let teh plates get some grip back, or take them out and boil them.

You're better to use a slightly less saucy oil and change it more regularly, then sell your dog and put a load of top notch synthetic in... (IMHO)
