Warranty probs
Discussion
I think I have a potential problem on my hands regarding my bikes warranty.
Its an SV650S, less that a year old, 16K miles, the first 3 services were done at the dealer but I have done the last 2 as its too expensive to keep visiting the dealer every 2 months.
This morning I broke down in the Blackwall tunell! The main fuse (30Amp) blew. The AA replaced it and it started and idled OK but as soon as I tried driving off it blew again when I got into 2nd gear.
Its been dropped off at the dealers and I asked about the service history if it were a warranty repair, he said its void.
Although I have no idea what it is yet, if its an expensive fix that has nothing to do with servicable items how can the servicing have anything to do with this?

Unfortunately you may well have a problem. Manufacturers will always claim that servicing carried out outside the dealer network invalidates the warranty. They claim that this is because they are unsure if a) the service has really been done, b)whether it was done properly and c) whether proper parts were used. Whilst the above has some truth to it there is also the view that they want to charge a lot for servicing and losing your warranty is a strong incentive to force you to use them. Should you challenge this view you are unlikely to win as it is a term of the contract between you that you have the machine serviced by them. I don't think the EU have changed this legal position yet although they are looking at it.
Hopefully it doesn't sound like you have a major problem - although I am no electrical expert!

Alternative position mags - time to find a good independent, one who's less stroppy about you doing your own servicing and charges less per hour than a dealer. It works well for me with the TVR. I see no reason why you can't do this with a bike.
I'm getting through the miles at a similar rate to you - 10k and a bit in less than a year. I'm going to try and hang on to the bike as long as possible, to reduce the impact of the depreciation, but there's got to be a point where getting a service done is more important than who does it.
Surrey bikers - any good independent garages for servicing about?
Cheers,
Steve

Theres a guy just set up in Bookham (not far from Boxhill) who apparently was a spanner man for Phill McCallem ex TT racer(SP?). Hes based at The ex Suzuki garage nr the petrol station. 954 girlie knows him i'll ask next time i see her.
I usually do servicing like oil and filter changes myself. Not sure about engine work though.

Turned out to be the main +ve wire had rubbed on the frame and caused a short, the Dealer charged me £68 (1.5 hrs labour) to fix as my service book is not dealer stamped.
I have done the servicing myself according to the manual and there is no mention of checking the wiring loom so I can't see what difference this makes.
A lawyer at work has given me some good suggestions on what to do so I will be writing to Suzuki to request a refund. The bike is clearly at fault regardless of the service schedule and I will be telling them this.
