I intend to do my CBT and get a 125, just to get around, I'm not really interested in speed...as long as the bike gets my 16st frame up to 65mph. I'm a complete novice so i need as much help as possible. I have narrowed it down to three bikes, the Aprilia RS125, Cagiva Mito and the Sachs xtc125. Now the first two smack of unreliability and a delicate nature,is this true ? If i do get the Aprilia or the Mito will i be able to get parts and are the parts gonna cost me an arm and a leg ? The Sachs is the one I want but not much is known about them, are they any good ? Please feel free to e-mail me
the only yam is the TZR50 -it's an R6 look-a-like but only 50cc, bloody good looking but way underpowered.

There was a very similar post recently where somedody was asking about the Xtc, may be worth a look. But bear in mind that
125's tend to be overpriced for what they are
If it's your 1st bike you will drop it especially at this time of year and fairing is expensive to replace
factor in good quality kit (helmet, gloves, boots, etc)into your budget
you will get bored of a 125 quickly
but at the end of the day you pays your money you takes your choice (that doesn't quite sound right ??)

Well I'm currently riding a Cagiva SuperCity 125 which has the same engine, brakes and wheels as a Mito but in a SuperMoto/Enduro style package
Engine wise budget for a new piston and cylinder head re-con at 10k miles and if you do it yourself it'll cost you about £250
stooz can get chains and sprockets and most Cagiva only bits can be had direct from the importer, 3 cross motorcyles
Mine which has it's work cut out dragging my lardy gut about can nudge 90ish (on private land of course) and this is with me sat bolt upright MX Styleee so the 'sports bike' styles should be a bit quicker

In the end i came down to these 3 too. I took them all for a ride and in the end i bought the XTC for the looks, the 4stroke engine and reliability, oh and the fact that i didn't see many around.
But now i wish i went for the Aprilia.
I was unfortunate to be in a collsion with a stupid kid that decided it would be fun to run into the road and now the bike is a bit on the mangled side, I now find out that these bikes are Expensive to repair espically when you don't have fully comp insurance.
What you will also notice with the XTC is that you will soon find that the bike doesn't pull away fast enough or doesn't have that extra power when you really need it (to overtake a bus or numpty in a Micra), no offense but i am about 3 stone lighter than you and i feel that there is no power in the bike, top whack on the bike is about 75@12,500rpm in 5th gear, and it takes a while to get there.
From my experiance if you want a bike that stands out from the crowd and is reliable (like a German car) then get the XTC for speed, better handling and more fun go for the Aprilia or the Cagiva, these 2 are much cheaper and have been around longer so parts should be cheaper and in better supply.
Hope this helps
You can email me if you need anymore advice on the XTC.

Cheers d3ano for that...I think thats settled it for me. I saw a Cagiva the other day and it didn't look too bad at all. I'm not to sure about buying brand new though as everyone says, you're bound to have a spill at some time...but at least i know what I'm going for...a black Cagiva it is then !

oops, sorry I thought it was a 125
The only 'recent' 125 I've ridden was an Aprilia RS125 which I had for a couple of days as a courtesy bike when the Duke was being serviced a couple of years ago.
Obviously it was a bit lacking in power compared to the 916 and I had to take the overtaking a bit steady! but I was impressed with how well it went for such a small bike and managed about 95mph on the way home - in the rain (private road of course) and it handled beautifully, one thing I was told by the dealer was not to ride until engine temp reached a certain figure (digital readout) so I imagine reliability is not it's strongest point but all in all a top bike.
I think it had been deristricted though.
