As some of you will know I crashed my bike late last year. Because I've moved down to England to live I haven't had a chance to inspect the damage and make a decision on repair.

At the weekend I was home for a visit and assesed the damage. Oh crap, one bent fork. Shit.

The fork is warped and there are slight dents in the rim of the front wheel. Combined with all the panel damage and the subframes being knackered I now reckon the bike is beyond economical repair. It could be fixed but it would now need to see the inside of a dealer to get the forks sorted and thats big bucks. I don't have the tools or time to do it myself.

So I now think I'll have to see if a scrappie will take it off my hands and give me some dosh for it. How likely is this.
The remains include:
main frame,
engine,
tank (slight dent)
2 panels,
rear wheel (wortha a mint on RVFs)
swingarm/suspension combo,
front wheel (slightly dented),
full exhaust system, front lights
brake system
forks if they can be straightened.

The plastics, subframes, clocks, rear lights are gone.

Anyone hazard a guess at what a scrappie would offer.
What about a dealer?
What about selling it on ebay as a project (would only need forks straighened and race plastics to be a race bike)

I'm not too chuffed that I've written off a 3k bike within 3 weeks of purchase but there you go. These things happen. I now need to figure out the best way to move forward.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

If the forks aren't creased mearly bent its a straightforward repair

Tank could be got from a scrappy (with luck) as these get dented in most cases

Its not gunna be worth much Im afraid mate, I'd say if you got more than a grand for all the bits you'd be doing very well and £ hundreds is more likely.

Unless you do it up really well- (ie use genuine panels etc & there is no indicaton it has been binned, even to an experts eye) it wont be worth much in resale either- I sold my nice tidy RVF a few months back, twas a 15k miler in good nick but had a couple of non genuine fairing panels & a crack on one of the others & the best I could get for it after having several people look at it was £2k.

Ok the forks being pukka upside downies, will cost a lot to replace if they are completely shagged, but assuming they can be fixed- if it was me in your shoes I'd shove some non genuine panels on (genuine ones are very pricey) & 2nd hand other parts on it & use it again- Ok it might not look too pretty uness you get it all sprayed up & its easy to spot non genuine panels on RVF's, but at least it won't be such an issue financially if you bin it again.

If you do decide to sell it complete, drop me an e-mail through my profile- a mate of mine loved my RVF but couldnt afford it at the time when I was selling- he is quite handy with the spanners tho & might fancy a winter project.

How did you crash it?

If you didn't hit something too hard, I'd buy it off you. Quite fancy a winter project.

iguana - I keep looking at the bikes on www.hbc.co.uk - there are some amazing bargains. My mate is an independant insurance assessor that checks crashed bikes for NU, Bennetts, etc. Their rules are fairly strict, for example even a small scratch on the frame and it's a CAT D. Any sign of frame deformation and it's a CAT A or B (must not be repaired) unless the rest of the bike is totally mint still.

Mate, visit www.motoliner.com They can straighten a fork leg for 40 quid. I think wheels are a similar price to get straightened too. If not then check ebay and breakers yards. RVF wheels can't be that hard to find.

Whether it's a write off is decided by the insurance company (I think), so just fix the bits you need to get it roadworthy, fix the fairing yourself using car body repair fibre from halfrauds and you're back on the road.

Goodlife- considering the amount of grief you gave me- in your extremily drunken state at BTaP, coz for self preservation & not wanting to get clocked & banned at 180mph I prefer 400's & 600's to R1's etc, are you sure you want to consider a 400, coz you know I'll just have to abuse you for it

I've emailed a couple of you guys.

One of the main reasons for trying to get rid of the bike is that I simply don't have the time to fix the bike.
Plus how would I get it to a dealer to get the forks fixed, I have no way to transport the bike.

Cheers for all sugestions, keep em coming.
I will ride again!! (eventually)

Mr iguana, I do have a faint memory of some bar-banter about your rather low cc count .

Mind you I was thinking a finely honed 400 would be a great track hack. I'll just have to shed a few lbs from the rider!

Andy - got your mail. Like the men have said, a broken bike is not going to be worth as much as you might like.

Andy, Motoliner do a postal service so you can send your wheel and fork leg... but it sounds like you're gonna sell it anyway.
