I have been riding around now for about 2 weeks and my thumbs are getting somewhat sore (the bridge of the thumb joint) is this normal and i will get used to it or have i damaged my joint in someway (hairline fracture???)
Don't really want to be riding around if its making the problem worse, its coming to a point were my grip is getting weaker.

Thanks D3

This isn't meant to sound patronising, so if it makes you feel patronised please feel free to tell me phuq off!

Many inexperienced riders make the mistake of clinging onto the bars with a vice-like grip. If you are doing this, relax and hold the bars with the same delicate touch you likely usually reserve for Mrs D3ano.

Gripping the bars tightly will ensure you never relax while riding, will make riding over bumps feel like punching a brick wall and will exacerbate any potential evil front-end handling traits your bike may have (especially the dreaded tankslapper).

Agree entirely - that's what I did at the start.

Relax as you go - but not too much!!!

Phew thats good news, its only a muscle problem rather than bone.
I do find that after a 30min ride its as if i have gripped on for dear life as my hand (more the left than right)is sore. I will try this going home tonight. And try and get out of that habbit then. Cheers guys

Probably because you do more with your right hand normally than your left, or are you left handed?

Also you may (or may not) cover your clutch lever as you ride which may stretch your left hand a bit more.

It will go away as you ride more...

Agreed relax. Bars are for control not security.

Also, try to have your arms parallel to the bike, and not at an angle... will save your wrists! and after all you are using your weight equally as much to steer as you do the bars.

D3ano, where do you find this problem is?

I get an aching in the base of my thumb in the bit which is more palm than thumb (if you know what I mean) when I've been riding for a while

Yep thats the place, if i lift my thumb upwards it hurts at the base of the thumb where the muscle is and the bone area. (would be great if i knew the names of these places)
Oh and in reply to the above, im right handed and i have my left hand over the clutch when i am riding.

I'd just like to point out that anybody covering the clutch with their right hand has a fundamental problem with their riding style! Unless you are Gary Rothwell...

What gloves do you use? I have Alpine-star GP Pro's and only noticed a problem since using these.

IIRC I get mine in my left hand too. MAybe a clutch related thingy then.

(Don't know if any of this is of any relevance to anything though )

p.s. Mon Ami Mate - you're silly, PML

The gloves were some freebies that were thrown in with the bike. Dynamic Leathers????
