Up here in the North West, as I'm sure elsewhere in the country, many new cycle lanes have been created, often reducing dual carriageways to wide single ones.

But for 90% of the time, these lanes are devoid of bicycles.

If the government are serious about promoting cycles and motorcycles to reduce traffic congestion, then why not allow motorcylces/scooters to use these lanes provided they move back into the main traffic flow to pass any cyclist that they might come across?

Has this been covered before and could it work?

There was a news article in the MCN on Monday, seems some enlightened MP (oxymoron?) shares your views. www.motorcyclenews.com/news/detail?sectionID=50677&documentID=183552

I think they're allowing motorbikes to use bus lanes in London now, which is a step in the right direction.

Seems a good idea with bus lanes and I hadn't thought of those, but should equally work with cycle lanes too.

Would certainly ease traffic flows and stops some of these pratts who simply don't want to see you make better progress than them parked in the traffic.

Is that a "definate" that bikers can now use the buslanes in London? I have had enough of stupid car drivers that pull out in front of me (and i have only been riding for 2 weeks!) because i am able to beat the traffic and they are stuck in their car (normally merc, Lexus, 4x4's etc
It would be much safer riding in the bus lane as there is never a bus in there.

No it's not. There were a few roads in London where this was being trialed, A23 being one I remember, you'll see if you're allowed to use them on the signs for the bus lane. Problem on the A23 was being in the bus lane was at least as dangerous as playing in the traffic.

99% of bus lanes in London are still off limits to bikes. the only bus lane you can use is on the road from the City to the Blackwall Tunnel (A23 sounds right). This is a pilot scheme they are running for 12 months to see if they should open up all bus lanes. No news on how its going so far. There was a lot of opposition from cycle groups who were concerned about being mown down by savage hordes of hells angels in the bus lane. Tossers.

With the vastly differing speeds between a PTW and a cycle I'd rather not have to be diving in and out of a cycle lane thanks all the same. I agree something needs to be done about bus lane usage but mixing it with cyclists is asking for trouble imo.

I'd stick to the main carriageway for now I think.

I am not talking about cycle lanes, only bus lanes which are populated by numerous buses but rarely contain any cyclists. Most cyclists I know in London will not use bus lanes as they find bus drivers aggressive and dangerous to cyclists. They all seem to use back streets as the safest way to get around. As a result, my commute to work across central London involves a lot of bus lanes which are frustratingly empty for 90% of the journey. Seems ridiculous not to let motorbikes use them....

Agreed with both of the last two posts. Bus lanes that I see are generally empty too. However, given of the some London cyclists I've seen, I wouldn't want to be too near them on a bike.

I was on the M40 the other day, and I think the sign said that bikes were allowed to use the BusTaxi lane there too?

Indeed on your tax disc under type of vehicle it will say Bicycle - is this proof enough if stopped? Are there (enforcable) speed limits in Bike lanes?

Mine too!

Doubt we'd get away with it though - what about any BiB thoughts on the subject?
