Difficult one isnt it? Some say Sheene had it easy until Roberts turned up. My own personnal opinion is that Roberts was more consistant, but sheene was far a better showman. Given that in 1980 i was 8 years old i didnt really have a good account of it all!

I'm reading sheenes autobiography at the moment and i have to say its not written that well. Makes an interest read though. Keeps going backwards and forwards which to simple farm boys like me is hard work!!

The honest truth was that Roberts was the better rider, in terms of technical ability. However, Sheene had a big heart, bigger balls and occupied a level of hero status that Roberts could never hope to aspire to...

Out of the two i was always a big Barry Sheene fan,but putting into perspective the fact that Joey Dunlop mastered a track like the Isle of man so completely for so long in my mind makes him a braver more skillful rider, that takes a lot of bottle, either screaming along a wide open international circuit surrounded by grass and run off areas,or sreaming by a post office at the same speed?I once saw an onboard video of Joey Dunlop riding around the Isle of man,the most breathtaking thing i ever seen, especially when he says the bit of the track he was riding along at about 120mph in dark early morning conditions, wet track with leaves on it and explains,"You've got to watch at this bit,it gets a bit slippy?"as he's leaning over at a 45 degree angle screaming the bejesus out of his bike with a heavily vibrating front end:-)That reminds me,i've got to try and track that video down again someplace.

I always hate these "who is better" arguments as I believe all of the greats were unbeatable "at their best" thats what made them great. For me they are all excellent.
