How old before person can go pillion?

I believe this has changed in recent years. IIRC it used to be nine years, for some strange arbitrary reason. However, I understand the law is now that if the pillion can sit with both feet on the pegs, they are legal.

I watched a TV programme a while back where a Cop was discussing this law and he said there is no age limit as long as pillion can reach pegs and sits astride the bike, strangely there is no requirement that the pillion faces forwards

So I guess the answer is actually "when you trust them to hold on properly" as they will reach the pegs way before I'd feel they were ready to go pillion. Unless you have a GoldWing .
