I went to the boat show yesterday (i know its not bike related) apart from the usual caravans on water there was a powerboat racing class called 'Zap cats'. Small boats with outboards and they get up to 40 knots, launch them of 15 ft swells and generally have a fantastic time. They take a driver and navigator / ballast person the lot incl the boat for the fist season is roughly 4.5 k each incl lid, wetsuit, race licence and one yrs entries. Anyone had any experinces with power boat racing? Sounds great fun!

Ooooh, hello sailor.

Nope, haven't done any boat stuff really. They always seem to crash once they get moving briskly and I've never liked the idea of drowning

Went out for a blast with Nutcase yesterday. We did the bumpy roads good and proper. 2 PB's for me. 1 was the highest/furthest jump that I've done so far down the bumpy road and 2 was wheelying for the furthest distance. Not sure how far, but it was pretty ridiculous. Did some syncronised wheelying during the day right up until Nut's front fairing nearly fell off A quick visit to P&H to get a new bolt sorted it out though and we duly carried on.

AJ, yip Ive seen 'em racing & I've had a quick go at as my mate used to race in the 40hp class.

This was in South Africa where it is a big sport & known as rubber duck racing. Most crazy is the 5 day 700km trans Aghulus race which starts one side of SA & ends the other & you go round that nice calm bit of ocean known as the Cape of good hope

Also its growing in popularity in Australia not a huge sport in the UK- yet!

I'd love to do it myself so if you need a decent reasonably experienced crew (got instructor quals in powerboating/sailing/Scuba & offshore yachmaster etc) drop me a line

You might find a "zap cat" racer on the Tuscan forums. I was down at Newquay a couple of weeks ago and there was a zap cat race taking place off Watergate Bay. Black Tuscan seemed to be with one of the teams .. also a Cerbera kicking about the place.

Looked quite mental. Zap cat is steered with a twist throttle tiller arangement on the outboard. So I guess you are clinging on with one arm to the boat, steering and throttle with the other arm stuck out behind you, twatting around through the surf at around 60mph.

At last some saine people!

Iguana,
I'm going to book a test ride / demo down in southampton. Not exactly sure when at the moment, but it looks bl**dy good fun. I am, i have to point out, a complete novice having just done my level 1 at sailing with sails. If i can a) afford to do it and b) dont go bike racing i most certainly will be looking for a crew / driver / cost shairer.
try this www.zapcat-racing.com

ATG,
Thanks for sugesting a post on the Tuscan website, is that this PH site or a specific tuscan site?

954 Girlie,
You know me so well! Trying to look at a race preped sv next w/e when down at Brands Hatch.

a.j the man you need to speak to at zapcat racing is tony.

I have been for a test demo myself £50, which is refunded if you buy a new one, i was looking into as an alternative to my jet ski, they push you quite hard to race it and at about £7,000 are fairly dear.

It is a race ready craft at £7000 and supposedly competive out of the box. As you can tell i have not yet brought one, he does have some second hand ones for £5500, which seem ok.

After 5 mins out on the water I was a bit board as it was flat, but I am having another go when its choppy. Am selling jet ski as I have brought a new onew for now but want a go in the chop. Also try ceaser f5 thundercat, very similar boat, bit faster and cheaper. 45mph zapcat no propgaurd 55 for a thundercat, so if you fancy going for a demo togeter on thundercat in north devon let me know.
there e mail is www.mullacottmarine.co.uk.

I wonder if 954 girlie can swim? lol

Yes I can swim, I'd have been a bit daft to get towed out to the middle of a lake behind a speedboat whilst balancing on a wakeboard if I couldn't swim!! lol

Ahh on that very note what a fab aquatic & biking day I had today.

Biked into work lovely 25miles B road blat in the cool crisp morning air, nip off work early cut thro the traffic and scoot on some A rd's in the heat of the day & go for a water ski/wakeboard/mono ski/kneeboard for a couple of hrs. Then bike the 60 or so miles home- some on dull motorway- boo! but a nice 20 mile A & B red blast at the end in the nice warm twlight ahh a spot on day.

My arms & shoulders will ache like hell tomorrow tho

Many zapcatters come from sports like moto-cross, go-karting, mountain biking and so on. The final of this year's National Zapcat Champs will take place at Watergate Bay in Cornwall later this month. It will definitely be worth a spin to Newquay (25-26 Sept) even for those who are afraid of getting wet!!
