bike license etc
Discussion
my first post in this daunting and unforgiving corner of PH
I'm looking into doing my bike license, as I can now do the direct-access route..
can anyone recommend a good (and cheap) place to do the whole thing.. including CBT, bike lessons, bike-hire, inclusive insurance etc etc
basically I want to get the license out of the way, and get the bike later when I have recovered (financially)..
I'm after a SuperMoto type bike btw.

Definately do it. I wholeheartedly enjoyed the training (weren't keen on the test though ). I looked in my local papers and asked a few friends. I would recommend smaller companies is better as the larger ones seem to not care as much.
The other thing to do is do the CBT with the option of DAS afterwards this is what I chose to do and allowed me to judge their training before spending lots of dosh. The school I went with, the boss tries to match the instructor to the student and he got it spot on with me. Someone with a good sense of humour and knew when to encourage and when to b*ll*ck.

As previously mentioned, do your CBT and assess the quality of the training you receive, but more importantly see how you get on with riding before commiting your self to a large wad of cash.
DAS is not for everyone, particularly intensive courses as all you are taught is how to pass a test rather than the skills for life. Certainly in my experience (27 years as a qualified learner instructor) those that take just a little longer and spread the learning process over a slightly longer period of time not only save themselves money in the long term but also become better riders.
Speak to your local DSA driving test centre and ask who they would recommend on the quiet. The examiners know who are good and those they are not too happy with, although they are not allowed to recommend one firm over another, they will certainly point you in the right direction.

Piers, does direct access still apply? I thought they got rid of it?
There has been talk of getting rid of Direct Access, but it will need an act of Parliament to do so, and whilst the Europeans are demanding more stringent learner driver tests it is therefore unlikely in the near future.
In fact, next year the bike test will become even more difficult when the new off road manouevering test is introduced before you are allowed to take the full practical test.
