Afternoon all.

I am going to test ride a Yamaha R6 at the weekend and was wondering if anyone new of any other deals on bikes at the moment? The reason for the R6 is the Yam finance deal (0% over one or two years). And the semi-reasonable insurance of a 600 over a 1000. I haven't been in biking for ages and don't know really what I should be paying under the £7,300 asking price. Are they flexible price-wise at the moment?

My other question is about insurance. I haven't had a bike for the last 4 years or so and insurance is proving to be a nightmare, £850 TPFT from Yamaha is the best by £100 so far...gutted, but needs must. Does anyone else fall into the 0 years NCB, driveway in town (Warwick, so not exactly a crime hot-spot), no points etc? And if so, what are you paying?

Also, am I likely to find that the performance is lacking(I know torque will be...) as my last bike was an '86 GSX-R 1100. Top-end power is similar to the R6(123bhp with alleged RAM-Air effect).

No - I shouldn't think so.

I bought an R6 rather than an R1, because it had plenty of performance. Difference is that you can twist it right round to about 15,000 revs - and boy is that fun!!!

When I tested a few bikes out I ruled out a Honda and the R1 on the basis that I would lose my licence too quickly if I was happy doing 150mph on a test ride (I did mention the private road didn't I?). The R6 was a bit more fun up and down the box.....

£7300 o.t.r is list according to my local bunch (www.carrickyamaha.com/prices.htm) you can usually haggle for a few hundred or get them to throw in the cost of an alarm/imobiliser and data tagging for that price.

re. insurance, if your in town and the bike is parked on a driveway then they're going to take the p1ss with any brand new sports bike.

Try H&R (www.insurance2000.co.uk) they'll take any car NCB into account, that said the Yahama figure sounds about right; knowing what some others are paying.

Go & buy MCN, all the cheapest deals from the large dealers are in there. Riossi were selling 03 R6's for £6000, before they shut. Try this place for insurance http://quotes.clickquote.com/choicequote/qq1.asp?

whats your back garden like? can you get a metal shed for bike type thing? eg www.secure-a-bike.com

this will be classed as garaged. if not, try me for a ground anchor and good padlocks, some insurance co's recognise them as well (bennets?) there on-line quota system gives you an option to list loads of security devices.

the bike itself sounds expensive, cant you get some 0% credit cards to boost a deposit rather than pay HP in hidden purchase costs. (they get you in the end)

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions. The bike is on a 0% finance deal anyway so I don't think I can do better with a different loan! Unless someone only wants 80% of the loan value back... Please?

I don't have a back garden so I can't get any kind of enclosed covering/garage in place, unfortunately. I'll definitely be looking to get a ground anchor though: Bikes are so light now that one person could lift them up and stick them in the back of a van...

Clickquote.com came up with £1200 on a full quote, and a more reasonable £940 on a quick quote. Bennets caught me out like that as well, when I rang them up they said that the quick quote wasn't binding. Gits.

P.S. Those private roads are great, aren't they...?

Are DK's bikes imports? I don't fancy winding the insurance companies up any further or they may just tell me to pi$$ off. Which wouldn't be nice.

Funky. Whereabouts are you? Are you a bike dealer?

Yes DK are importers - I have never heard anything about insurance issues with these though - having had 2 imports I'd be interested to know if there is something to worry about here??
I Always understood that they were exactly the same bikes (bar KPH clocks).
I thought the 'shock horror' stories were urban myths started by UK retailers to keep the prices artificially inflated. I know that DK offer 3 year warranties with their bikes & never heard bad things - does anyone have any info on this cos my next bike will be the cheapest - regardless.

DK also sell a LOT of non import bikes, dont assume its import.

the only real issue with import maybe the country of origin may have limiters on the engine for BHP or speeds according to the countries road rules. its best to know the dyno specs of the UK version to compare to the one your buying.
DK are very helpful, and would probably agree to stick the bike on their dyno if you actually buy it?

also lights might point right not left.

DK are as reputable as you can get and they're straighter than a lot of main dealers IMHO.

Obviously the lower prices are reflected in the second hand values, but there's nothing wrong with buying an import from them. I bought a TDM850 from them a few years back ('96) and it was pukka. Came from Germany!

They change (or adapt) the clocks, no probs on the R6 'cos it's digital and can switch between the two, and adjust the headlamps. Then it's good to go!

I've got no problem with getting an import as long as it has the same performance and spec as a UK version. Obviously it would be nice if the import was faster though...

The reason that I may still get an official one is that Knotts are only a few miles from where I live and for servicing, warranty work etc. it's nice to travel as short a distance as possible. Plus they indicated that they would give me a few hundred pounds to go towards some equipment.

As an aside, can anyone recommend a helmet for around £200? It's been a few years since I last looked at them and there isn't a buying guide in any of the current publications that I have seen.

On the import bit, just find a web forum for R6's and ask what the differences is, I am sure someone will know.
I bought an '02 SV650S at the end of last year and the imports were slightly cheaper than UK bikes. But I discovered through a web site (as the dealers didn't have a clue. Not DK btw) that the Euro bikes didn't have carb heaters and only used one headlight on dipped beam instead of 2 on the UK bikes. That combined with silly MPH stickers on the speedo made me choose the UK bike. The difference was small, maybe £100-200.
