I was wondering how many of us have been unlucky enough to get injured while biking?

I would guess it's more than half, if the people I know who are bikers is anything to go by.

Is getting hurt really an occupational hazard of biking?

Twice on my DT50, some asshole pulled out in fronytof me and luckily i was on something as slow as the dt as i jumped off and let the bike slid into the car.
And once going around an corner when wet and it slide from underneath me.

Mmmm..yes Broken Collarbone, Ribs, toes plus various cuts, bruises & gravel rash and a few 1,000s of £ worth of bike damage - still spread over 25 years it's not too bad really.

Don't let me put you off though!

Yip a couple of times shagged knee from my 1st one, just a bit battered from my last.

I'm just waiting for Mel to come along & list his race injuries over the years

I would say if you bike for say at least 5 yrs and do more than just a few miles a year you are gunna have at least one 'off' I cant think of any of my biking mates that havent.

I can't do that, I've got to do some work today and the list would be longer than the cars McNabs owned

I was lucky enough to take out Jamie Whitham once in a 125 race at Donnington, he lifted off through the Craner curves and i tagged his back wheel taking us both out...

I asked him later why he had lifted off and he said he hadnt, i think he was scared of the curves !!

No major injuries to either of us as it was a fast drying damp track and we slid for what seemed like a mile !!

Most of my "offs" have been those silly ones when you fall over when stationary or try to pull away and stall You just know you look a right pr@t!!

I had my first accident two days into biking and decided I didn't like the idea (of falling off) too much!

Yeah a few times. Broke 2 toes in the first 5 months of biking, after 5000 trouble free miles! collected some huge bruises in my time as well. Always got back on - when the bike was able to move that is. Some crashes, like lose of traction type things are painless but expensive. Hitting other things usually hurts & costs big time! and sometimes the fear of slipping can be really strong, eg going out on frost. In my newbie days, I had some real bad moments - heart stopping stuff.

Yet the joy of it all kept me going for quite a few miles before realising it's a dangerous game after all. Think I might get a track bike as Mel suggested. Too many idiots on our roads now.

Yup,

Some old duffer in a black cab decided he wanted to change lanes into one where I was quite happily riding on the M4 flyover at Chiswick.

It went, ground, sky, ground, sky, ground armco.

Got away with severe bruising and a buggered knee.

Fare in the back was a lovely lady. She said "I just heard a big bang and saw you going down the road like a rag doll "

Wrote of my T595 and did him for 3.5k injury compensation. Worst bit of all was the fear of being runover by another car as it was in rushour traffic

Thankfully no injuries resulting from a get-off. Worst damage was to self-esteem when I was parking the bike outside the office. Was so distracted by attractive young lady walking along the opposite side of the road that I forgot to put the side stand down. Bike slowly leaned over, past the point of no-return. Doh!

Many offs but never any broken bits (touches wood).

Most embarassing ones:

1) Rear-ending a friends bike right outside 6th form college, in front of a packed crowd waiting for the bus.

2) Donnington - trying to ride off on a brand new Monster having left the disklock on. Crack, bugger, foot slipped, toppled. Was on grass though so no damage except the mudguard.

It's nice to know that some people haven't been injured yet. I haven't had an off yet, I was beginning to think it was inevitable!
I have dropped a bike on a couple of occasions though

When u first posted this my answer was no, scrub that now for a yes. I've had my Duke for all of 2 weeks and have just binned it, slowish right hander...remember looking at a heap of gravel at the side of the road thinking I don't wanna go there, yep next thing I'm in the gravel, lost it...a few somersaults later and I ended up in the ditch.

Things I've learned or had reinforced today? maybe these'll help some other newbies as well.

1. Don't fall off. It hurts.
2. Target fixation , I need to sort this big style, see the corners for beginners thread. Don't want the next time to be a Mack truck.
3. Full body gear pour moi in the future, I only had my armoured jacket on as I hadn't intended going out of town . I've now completely done in my already busted knee.

Harsh lesson learned.

Thx, I'm fairly philosophical about it, I'd rather it happened at 30mph than say 70plus. My mate was running a book on it...thx Kev for ur confidence in me

When I was 18 I left the road in the rain at about alotofMPH and that was a monster wake-up call.

Yours sounds like 1 nasty set of injuries..were you wearing a full face helmet ?
