suzuki question ,someone might know?
Discussion
Just wondered if any of you guys and gals know anything about Suzuki TLS1000's as i have a problem with mine. The petrol tank is leaking from where the pump goes into the tank but it is not the seal.It might be a cracked spot weld that is in that area(but hidden from view) but i'm sort of guessing now.Has anyone heard of or come accross one of these problems?or does anyone know of anywhere that i might find any info on any similar problems?Cheers in advance Paws
As you will see from my nickname, I am a TLS owner any queries let me know, the guy I brought my bike from gave me every article on the tl ever published.
How old is the TL?
Is it a import?
Reason I asked is that the fuel leak was a problem on early machines as all other problems were sorted on later machines. I suspect the bike is an import as most UK bikes had the problem fixed, Mine is a 2000 bike and (touch wood) had no problems. Unfortunatly the origanal problem required a new tank, go for an aftermarket one that is a little bigger.I only get 90 miles from a tank.
Or get yours enlarged (the tank) and rewelded, the problem stemed from weak bolts on early models causing tanks to flex and leak, should be sorted under warrenty. If the bolts are hollow it hasnt been done. Get it seen to asap, the tls forums will give you adresses, there were no cases of the tl going up in flames but dont be the first to let it happen.

Well what a mind full of information you all are on Pistonheads. Thanks very much, all the questions have now been answered. The bike is in NZ and is not an import(im a very recent deserter of Blighty to the quieter roads of New Zealand)What i have found out is that the bike(a 99 model)was black but had all its coloured parts swaped with a red (97 model)because the previous owner went off the colour scheme. The end result is that the tank on my bike is one of the duff ones and will have to be replaced/repaired at my expence....oh dear!I think a repair is the first course of action just to see if it can be done.I'll let you know how i get on
Thanks again folks

Just a thought - a cheaper thought.
On older machines one does sometimes get a vibration crack in a steel tank - where the lug is welded to the tank. The repair involves welding the damage, but the integrety of the tank is created by an internal treatment. A liquid sealant is puured into the tank, swilled aroung and allowed to set - no more leaks.
Could you use this?
For example, remove the fuel pump and carefully wrap in cling film. Replace the fuel pump and add the sealant. The wrapping will keep the sealant off the pump. Allow to dry, remove pump, remove file, install pump.
Might be worth a try given the cost of a tank. But I stress that I have not tried this - only on a welded tank.

Thanks for the suggestions,i had thought along similar lines but i decided to solder the flange and around the spot welds first, the advantage being its quite good at resisting cracking from flex....its easy to remove too if it fails.Second option is i'll tig weld the spot welds again(the factory ones)but i'll use a spot weld drill to take the material out of the top of it first.Anyhow,it looks promising so far and i will know very soon if its leaking.....its hung up in the workshop full of petrol so i can see clearly if it still weeps.I 'll give it a little time.
As for bike prices over here they are similar prices for anything from Japan, considerably more expensive for anything European but its a very small market. There were only 60 new road bike sales over 400cc(i think it was 400cc) in the whole of NZ last year....which i find quite unbelieveable.Parts are not really an issue as anyone on the internet can order anything from anywhere and that seems to be the way its going. However, dirt bikes are what sell over here in massive numbers and they are a load cheaper than the UK(except KTM though) Because i've always owned dirt bikes back in Blighty i was very aware of prices and over in NZ i would reckon all types of dirt bikes are on average 40% less....gulp!
Quad bikes are even cheaper than that percentage too.The real sweetener though(not gloating ,honest)is AVGAS is cheaper than normal unleaded at 0.94$ per litre(about 30 pence per litre)
sorry,rattling on i know.....cheers

Need more space than this server has to give you the good points.I thought i would miss Blighty but all the doom and gloom on the BBC website from back home convinced me i did the right thing. It really depends on the type of person you are.I dare say the majority of the UK's people would'nt like it where we are but rural remoteness, vast wide open spaces, miles from anywhere, its perfect for us.There are towns and cities but only small ones in the South Island. The North Island however does have a cosmo city feel around Auckland if you like that.
I think the best stats to show NZ in comparison to the UK are......NZ is 10% bigger the the UK,has 4 million people in total,of which 800,000 live in the South Island, the bigger of the two islands, and over a million live in Auckland(one city alone)That makes the rest of the country rather empty!
Its very empty down here in the South, unless you like sheep as friends. Our farm is in the mountains at 1800ft and we might see a truck go past the entrance to it once every couple of days
Theres a few pics of where we are on the link and if you do decide it might be for you we'd be only too glad to offer information.

Yip NZ rocks, spent a few months driving around both islands obiouslt the scenery is ace but the people are really friendly too.
Roads wise imagine the best roads from the west coast of Scotland, minus 80% of the already sparce traffic & that was it in my experience, also similar to parts of Norway & Sweden.
One of my 'when im a millionare' dreams is to have a garege full of bikes & cars in NZ for me & my buds to fly out & thrash about the South island for a bit when i need a break from making my milions
