we don't seem to agree with each other, every time I get on one - off road - I end up droppng it.

I have a question though which is probably daft, but it has been annoying me for a while - why do bike gear boxes always go through nutral to get first?

It strikes me as a rather strange thing, and I always mess up gear changes from 1st to 2nd.

So, if anyone can answer my numpty question I would appreciate it.

Cheers

I think they put neutral between 1st and 2nd so that you don't select it by accident, which might happen if it was at the end of the sequence (i.e. beyond 1st). And given that unless you're staionary or going very slowly, then 1st isn't used that much, so you should have to cross the neutral point. If that makes any sense!

On my bike I find it quite hard to pick up neutral anyway, especially with boots on, which I guess is a good thing really.

Cheers for the answer I can now rest easy. Makes a fair bit of sense I guess.
