Never liked the idea myself, could be ugly if you crash and land on your back...

Not a good idea. Would you fancy sliding along the ground with another 50lb strapped loosely to your spine ? Didn't think so. Tank bags are a much safer bet.

I've got a Karrimor Wind Tunnel which is quite small, but when it's on you wouldn't know it's there (aerodynamically designed apparently). Good for day trip stuff.

I usually only carry a change of clothes in it for work so I don't think it'd be too dangerous in a crash - in fact it may give some back protection

The problem is not with small, soft, day sacks but with people who insist on carrying their entire wordly goods in a 50l rucksack. I saw the aftermath of a spill where the rider had a tent in the bag, near Donington. Not pretty. Prob. also a good idea to avoid stiffened bags (some have metal bars in them) and remove any extraneous straps.

Must admit to carrying a rucksack with change of clothes for work. Suddenly started to worry about the 2 tupperware boxes full of sandwiches and the pair of shoes now...
Can anyone suggest a bag that would sit on the rear seat area and just clip quickly on. Don't really want a luggage rack or permenant panniers. It's a Triumph Sprint ST.

I tried the rucksack thing for a good two days before discarding it as a pain in the ae when commuting. Restricts your movement quite significantly, which is a danger in itself.

I bought an oxford tailbag for the SV. Carries most things and expands to a much bigger container when required. The zip connection to the base is poor imho, so I'd look for something with clips instead if I were you.

Steve.

They all look to work well. Pro-tailbag fits the Duke (just). But it looks a bit odd. It really is about time I bought a more fitting bike. Maybe a Beemer ?

LOL

I bought an Oxford Humpback tailpack on Saturday for my Speed Triple and I'm still getting used to it. The base attaches around the rear seat with a big Velcro strap which cannot be removed without removing the seat (or cutting it, I guess) and also has four bungee hooks. The bag itself is not enormous but expands enough to take a weekend's worth of clothes, I guess. It also has rucksack straps and a good carrying handle. The bag simply zips to the base, so it doesn't take forever to attach or detach it.

It's deeply uncool but I have a givi rack and top case on my blade. I've tried rucksacks, tank bags, soft panniers etc and I've found them all to be a pain in the *rse, restrictive of your movement and not very waterproof.

I treat the top case like a car boot and just sling my ruck sack into it. It's completely waterproof, barely affects the handling (imo), you can get to the petrol filler cap without any issues, it's secure, doesn't get in the way of pillions, definitely won't fall off/sit on your exhaust/get jammed in the back wheel and allows you full movement on the bike.

Best thing I ever bought imo.

Not cool though if that sort of thing bothers you.

Mark

Editted to add: there's also plenty of room for waterproof trousers, spare gloves etc. Also, I'll be putting a power feed to it very soon so I can charge my phone on the way to work.

I've got the Triumph soft panniers for my Sprint RS which work really well. You get nice protectors that clip on to stop the paint being scratched and a sort of mounting pad that attached to the seat, onto which the panniers clip. Very eay to use and waterproof, but probably more suited to a weekend away than the daily commute.

I must admit to riding my Bike with a ruck sack on.
I have a Berghaus 60l sack, with the full harness on the sholder straps. Feels very secure, it has an "Advent" foam back that moulds to the shape of yoru back (even feels comfortable when wearing additional CE armour)

I've got a fairly small Reebok rucksack that I only use if I can't cram everything into the tailpack. If I do use it I put all the heavy stuff into the tailpack (like padlock and chain) so if I do a bit of tarmac testing, I won't have a padlock/spine interface incident.

Their server must have been overwhelmed by the sheer weight of traffic from PH. What a great place to advertise

...doesn't slow me down

Mark

Edited to add: I'll try and remember to take some photos of it when I get it home tonight to give you an idea what they look like, it really doesn't look too bad if you go for something modern like a givi. Prepare for a shock when you ask for the price though.

Here you go, pictures of a top box on a blade (who'd have thunk it)...

Hope this helps you decide.
