That looks really good. I remember when the original came out and test rode one. Had an original Z900 too in 1976. Certainly looks-wise, I think Honda have done a slightly better job with the heritage style than Kawasaki. And certainly if I was in the market for a naked, both would be on my shortlist. To my eyes, these all look like ‘proper’ bikes. I’ve never really come to terms with the looks of adventure bikes, short and tall stuff, and things that look like an insect. The CB and Z are both fine looking bikes.
Hope the op really enjoys it , but for me I’d buy the hornet & save my self a couple of thousand pounds , Idid similar with the z900 v z900 rs , I couldn’t see £3,500 difference in that case , but if it was a choose between the z900rs & the cb1000f I’d pick the Honda as I prefer the styling , and the riding position looks more what I like , whereas I didn’t like the rs .
Hope you really enjoy though
I test rode one of these yesterday. I adore the looks and hoped it would be a replacement for my since departed and much missed CB1100.
It's a different flavour of bike to the CB1100 so perhaps slightly unfair to compare, but here's my brief thoughts;
Good
The engine sounds mega, and is super torquey & bright
Chassis feels lovely & neutral - keen to tip in
Damping is good - firm but controlled, and I wasn't bounced out of the seat on a rough undulating road at speed
Riding position is comfortable
Not so good
The throttle response at low speed and on/off is horribly snatchy, and not linear - it's really quite poorly mapped
You can tell the engine has Fireblade origins, as it really prefers being ridden hard - the whole bike still had a slightly frenetic feel to me
The brakes are good but perhaps lack a bit of progression (might just be the example I rode)
While I liked it I didn't love it, and I've made the mistake of buying a bike before that I liked rather than loved, so didn't go any further. I can't justify the price (even though it's pretty reasonable) on something that I'm not going to love like the CB1100, sadly.

Those giving feedback... how comfortable is it and how big are you? I keep thinking about replacing my 900 Hornet as my daily and one of these appeals (the Hornet is too ugly), but would they suit someone 6ft2 and are they all day comfortable?
I was only on it for 45 minutes but it’s a comfy thing. I really don’t like wrist heavy bikes. If you’re after all day comfort I’d probably spec the touring seat, the standard one is a little firm.
Picked it up today, 55 miles home,
1st impressions
Gearbox better on the Honda
Seat better on the Honda
Ride quality better on the Honda despite the Z9RS Having an Ohlins rear shock
Brakes about the same
The Honda does the usual Honda trick stationary it feels heavy despite them being roughly the same
But the moment you let the clutch out and start to move the weight just vanishes.
I don t care for the keyless fob system, but that might be because it s unfamiliar.
For and finish I d say the Honda edges it but there really isn t much in it.
Character? The Honda in spades, the cold start really sounds like an old air cooled lump from yesteryear firing up on three and a half cylinders, then chiming in on all four after a couple of seconds.
The asymmetric cam timing gives the Honda a slightly gruff note, but it s very smooth otherwise.
Performance? Can t tell yet as I haven t been over 4000rpm.
I like what the TFT screen can do on the Honda but the Kawasaki looks better for having the analogue clocks.
I think the Kawasaki looks the better but there s not a lot in it especially after I ve put a nicer exhaust on and fitted a tail tidy to it.
Will update when I ve been out a few more times over the week end.

A few picks with my 82 CB750F .

Well, proper run out today has given me plenty to think about, 175 miles 3.5 hours around Mountain View in Arkansas, Southern Ozarks, the roads are amazing. First thing the seat for me is excellent (but I am generously padded on my derrière) I was just getting a numb feeling after about three hours.
The Instrument cluster on the Honda is a model of clarity, a quick glance down and you can clock your speed immediately, yes they don t look as good as the Z9RS s but functionally they beat them Hands.
Engine, I m taking it to 5k now with the odd flirt up to 6k I ve set the change light to that so it warns me.
Between 2k and 5k in 6th it really pulls great for overtaking on the roads hear, you rarely need to knock it down a cog to make decent progress. Can t wait to get a few more miles on it. I ll certainly be looking at is a Map to smooth the fueling on a steady throttle it s surging all the time. One thing I noticed when I refueled after using the first tankful (which I suspect the dealership used 87 octane) I filled up with Shell V-power Nitro 93, it was noticeably perkier on this tankful.
Handling, it goes where you point it in a very fuss free way, the brakes are stunning.
Tires, the stock Dunlop Roadsport 2 s are miles better than the Dunlop GPR300 s fitted to the Kawasaki, they have no right being on a bike like this, I stuck a set of Michelin Road 6’s on it and it transformed the Z9RS, I ll certainly be fitting a set to the Honda in the very near future.
So things for the Honda,
1, a set of Road 6 s
2, a remap to release more go and smooth out the low rev snatchiness.
A radiator guard and a main stand
