So, a nice car driver decided she didn't like my old Pan ST1100 and smashed it up at the weekend and I'm afraid it's terminal. So after 35 years and 120k miles it's job is done and it's off to the scrap yard in the sky.. frown

I'm looking for a replacement and I'm getting the usual remarks and piss taken out of me for going out and getting another one.

What else should I get then I ask... and nobody can give me a better bike, so I thought I would ask on here.

Budget: £2,000 (let's go to £2.5k for something really, really good)

Use: Everyday commute (A, B roads, Motorway, about 60 miles with heavy traffic and filtering), All year riding and around 2k miles per month on average.

Size: Nothing bigger than the ST1100 width wise, so 37 inches - that is including mirrors/panniers.

Other: Shaft driven, no or a little amount electronics and easy to maintain by myself. Must have lots of storage space for clothes, laptop, shopping etc.

I've sorted out 3 1100's to look at ranging from 26k to 65k miles all fairly standard and look well maintained from the photos.

My mates are moronic, one suggesting that a KTM Superduke is an ideal replacement..so you can see what I'm up against!!.. hehe

What other bikes am I missing that I should consider?

FJR1300 should probably be on your list - just have to watch for rot and greasing the shock linkages.

BMW RT12** springs to mind, although I have no idea of you'll get one for buttons.

I guess there's always the Deauville for un-nickable two wheeled commutering.

Such a long time with the ST, well done.

You know the bike well, so get another.

Shaft drive and £2500 makes for a very short list.

The inline BMW K1200.

If you're looking at a K1200 then go for the brick engined version. BMW didn't get the inline engined K1200s right until they became 1300.

I meant inline with the wheels (the flying brick) as opposed to transverse. smile

Thanks all..

I should have put my max distance to travel as well... I've went as far as Japan and the US to import the right vehicles, but not willing to travel too far for a commuter/winter hack, so anything outside central Scotland is a no go.

I've lined up 1 FJR and 1 Trophy to have a look at as well at the weekend.

No BMWs in the price range that I like the look of and I already have a VFR (latest of the Gen 5 models), so don't want another one.

Will probably end up with another Pan... been around mine so long I can do most things easily enough and know how good (and somewhat underrated) they are.

Enjoying the commute with the H2 SX at the moment, slight overkill to get to work each day though!

This one caught my eye the other day.

Shaft drive, very comfy, well equipped and so much in budget you can take the Mrs away for a wee jolly on the money you have saved.

Of all the pointless threads on here this one is top 5. Just buy another Pan.

Just to add an often forgotten machine into the search.

Kawasaki GTR1000, shaft drive, panniers, not too big. I tend to gel with Kawasaki so I tend to favour them.
If you had a Pan for that long just replace like for like with the one you know inside out.

Personally I'd rather have a very old Honda than a very old BMW. So i would look for another Pan European. There must still be a few good ones out there.

That’s not a bad shout but can you get a working one in decent condition for £2k?
