I'm interested in a PXd bike from a main dealer but they state:

Bike will be sold as a trade sale and will be provided with a 6 month warranty & 12 month MOT.

When I asked if the Stator (a major engine out job would be covered). NO.

Apperently it's not electrical system etc items.

How can they state trade sale yet offer a warranty?!

Tells you all you need to know really. Do you want to take the risk or not?

Theres no such thing as a trade sale to a retail customer, I'd avoid anyone that even tried it !!!

It's a motorrad dealer as well. Bike hasn't done much mileage over the past 18months hence why I drilled down into T&Cs/the bike. No receipts for any major work

Bike taken as a trade in but not up to dealer standard to sell or simply not a BMW.

Last trade in I gave to Motorrad went straight to auction. I’ve never heard of them selling a bike the way you describe.

Personally it would depend on how much you like the bike and also how cheap it is. The price has to reflect the level of risk involved, if not more.

Just work on the basis that it's a trade sale and there's 'no warranty' and you won't go far wrong. As long as you do your due diligence and buy at the right price you'll be fine. Ignore the replies to your post saying otherwise - a bit of reading and due diligence and you could end up with a bargain.

It's all about a bit of common sense. If it looks like a turd then walk away.

What model of bike is it?

This all day long.

On any vehicle, soon as see “Trade Sale”, just click off and into the next one.

Think it’s irrelevant if they say it has a warranty, any dealer willing to be deceptive enough to try the “trade sale to the public” rubbish can’t be trusted on anything.

Agree, if they're treating it as a private sale then private price. Though why they've not just auctioned it would be worth asking...also, do you keep bikes for long anyway?

I've just bought a Triumph that's 22 months old from a (Honda) dealer who took it as part-ex. It has manufacturer's warranty up to 2 y.o. (has FSH). Then tried to sell me a 12 month one for £199 to start after 2 years. Looking at the exclusions, I declined. frown

Is it an R1200? It is a known problem on pre 2013 models but they changed the flywheel to supposedly help with ventilation on later ones.

I do like the boxer engines but it was another thing that put me off buying a bike with one. Having had to do a stator and a clutch on an R1 and being done in only a couple of hours, I decided engine out and back end off to do the same jobs if needed on a BMW wasn't worth it.

If it's a worry for you, don't bother. It'll just hang over your head.

Has anyone got a genuine bit of case law surrounding this? I'd be interested to see if anyone's been able to challenge it.

This type of nonsense needs reporting to trading standards either way

It doesn't have to have a warranty when it's a retail sale. A retail sale means it's covered by what the statutes say, CRA mostly.

As someone has posted though, take it on face value, is it cheap enough to buy with no comeback should the worst happen - whatever that might be.

I would be cautious buying a 10 year old RT. Not a no, but you need to thoroughly look the bike over, and it would have to have a full service history including final drive fluid changes. Depending on mileage I’d also like to see some evidence of suspension maintenance, they are notorious for leaking.

Before the 2015 CRA, I bought a couple of my best vehicles this way.

Respected local dealer gets trade-in, sells it 'out the back door' as trade, sold as seen.
Price reflects lack of valet/prep and lack of come-back rights.
I buy, knowing I'm relying on my own judgement, just as if I buy privately.

These days, I'm not sure exactly what he boundaries are, as in HMRC's eyes, anyone can be a trader.
