Anyone know where you can buy battery acid from these days? I need a new 6v battery for my TS250, and all of them come dry these days. I know there is new legislation because of battery attacks, etc, but sometimes there is a genuine requirement to buy it! I've only found one place offering it so far, and not only do they require a bunch of forms filled out but it's £25 per litre!

Annoying thing is that I'm sure I had a bottle left over from long ago but I can't find it anywhere.

I think many more batteries come filled these days.

Try Tayna. They probably flog more batteries than anyone else, so you will have the best chance of one that's not been sat on the shelf for ages.
We recently got a small 12V one for a mate's bike from them, bizarrely it was cheaper on their ebay shop than their own website, with carriage.

Alternatively I think Yuasa may sell direct.

Otherwise, I'd be asking a science teacher.
Or a place that sells a lot of batteries, I've dealt with marine and industrial places before.
IF you already have the battery, you may do better asking to get it filled rather than to buy the acid 'loose' so to speak.

I bought a battery from Tayna last year which was shipped full of acid but, unfortunately, arrived with a lot of its contents sloshing around in the sealed plastic bag in which it was packaged. It wasn't possible to safely capture the spilt acid and Tayna initially suggested that I sourced some acid from somewhere local to me. That turned out to be a ludicrous suggestion - nobody I contacted could supply acid, even Tayna themselves! After a bit of arguing Tayna shipped another battery.

Thanks for that. Tayna say "out of stock" but the Yuasa website lists a retailer near me so I may be able to order via them.

I like the science teacher suggestion tho!

Last time I bought one mail order it came with the acid in a special plastic container with 6 tubes. You snap the top off and the tubes line up perfectly with the battery refill holes. Are you sure it doesn’t come with the acid as per my description?

Edit just read a listing

“ Please note that the law around motorcycle batteries has changed, anyone wishing to buy a motorcycle battery with a separate acid pack will require an Explosives, Precursors and Poisons (EPP) Licence. To keep things simple for you, we sell pre-filled batteries and they come fully charged, ready to fit and you won't need a licence to buy these.”

The license thing is crazy. But anyway it seems they sell them prefilled?

I've had them like that before, but a lot of the websites now say words to the effect of "due to uk legislation we are unable to ship the acid separately". So if it's not a sealed battery (I need a 6N4B-2A, which isn't), they'll only supply it dry.

Happily, since I posted, I've just found a container of sulphuric at the back of the shed. I thought I still had it - I was looking for the wrong type and colour of pot!

Yeah just edited my reply. Pretty mental. If you were that way inclined you could just pour the acid out of the battery! You can get the, on ebay it seems though

Have you looked for a sealed / AGM / gel battery?

Oh that's a good spot, I didn't see any pre-filled. Although what someone said above about leakage is a risk I guess! On the Yuasa website it specifically says "this battery must be used in an upright position", so postage is always going to be risky!

Haven't found one yet but that would be a good solution.

It seems a bit compex now. Last one I got came with the acid in a seperate dispenser. Battery got really hot when I put it in . Very worrying at the time.
I would look for a sealed no maintenance battery now. Probably wont leak in transit. Or if really flush with cash, a gel one.

The last 3 batteries I bought on eBay (2 bike and 1 for a car) all came with the acid in them. Despatched with warnings on the boxes with this way up on them. Specialist battery couriers perhaps, because I've never had an issue.

I even shipped one battery back to Tayna because it was faulty and I just used the box it was delivered in.
