A bit of a rant or maybe the law has changed and I am unaware but I have noticed recently that certainly on the M25 and surrounding adjoining motorways that when the variable speed limit is in force or there is severe congestion on the road that HGV`s have started to occupy the far offside lane which is normally a big no no. Obviously one of the benefits of being on a motorbike is the ability to filter though solid traffic but this is rendered impossible when 3 HGV`s are side by side.

The M25 was st last week between Jct 24 & 25 at the evening rush time and I lost count the amount of HGV`s in the far right lane all stationary. My bike is quite narrow so managed to squeeze through with mirrors folded in etc but the poor bugger behind me is probably still parked up there !!

What gives ??

I hadn’t heard of any change, and assumed it was still illegal.

Without being xenophobic, were those lorries on foreign plates?

Where are the police eh? Oh yes, hiding behind cameras rather than doing roads policing work…

That is quite clear, i.e. it's not changed:

Are you sure they were articulated lorries rather than just 7.5 ton which, along with coaches, are allowed in the outside lane ?

Lane next to the hard shoulder (if there is one)? What's wrong with that?

Any vehicle towing a trailer, over 7.5 tonnes or have a speed limter fitted can not use lane 3 off a 3 lane motorway. If there is a 4th lane then they are permitted in lane 3. In effect they can't use the final outside lane. They can use it if another lane is blocked by an accident or if directed to do so by an authorised person.

Ultimately I wish we had “you must use the left most lane in between the hours of” rules for articulated lorries like various places on the continent.

But given our railways are broken, large amounts of freight has to be on the roads, and so people have gotta get their stuff somehow.

Have also seen this a few times recently, also lorries using the outside lane on the A34 in sections where they're not supposed to be. I assumed it's because of lack of police enforcement on the roads.

This also appears to be a regular occurrence with HGVs and Coaches on the M4 in the roadworks at the moment (J10-12), where the impatient ****s won't sit back and chill at 40-45mph in the busy sections, so instead hustle people along meters from their back bumper in the middle lane then invariable hop to lane 3 (of 3) to get along.....the 50mph limit ends, they pull back across (eventually) and have literally achieved nothing as even the slowest of cars pull back past.

Do they know something we don't? i.e. 56mph (on their limiter) and they know they won't get flashed?

It's happening quite often, I suspect quite deliberately, my next door neighbour's car was written off by an hgv in lane 4 between J16 & J17 of the M25.

I don't know that section of M4, but if people are doing 40-45 in the 50 limit, then it's not surprising that others might want to get past if they can.

So , it's not just me then !!

I wonder what the catalyst for this change of behaviour was or is. I've only noticed it probably 3 week to a month ago with the odd lorry but then getting progressively more prolific .

I can't say I've noticed it. But the motorways I use the most often are the M53, M56 and M6. That may or may not be relevant however.

I do lots of driving for work and can confirm this is now a thing. Particularly prevalent on the miles and miles of motorway currently with 50mph average speed cameras.

Trucks like to sit at their capped limit and are quite prepared to tailgate cars obeying the (stupid) 50 limits or just think “Fk it” and overtake the lot. A police car is exceptionally unlikely to put on the “Follow Me” lights to a Eastern European plated truck for 15 to 20 miles until the next safe place to pull it over.

I think they should be allowed to forward the fines to Customs at the docks and pay up when they leave.

I have only ever seen HGVs in the outermost of a three lanes motorway when those lanes are going to diverge into two separate motorways. HGV drivers do tend to take up that position quite early.
On Monday we had elephant race on the two lane A55 between an HGV on the left lane and a mobile home being carried on a trailered HGV, in fact there were two of these bullying their way through and holding up all the other traffic.

You’d all soon be complaining if your food / Amazon parcels wernt in the shops / on time !!
As a lorry driver who’s all over the country / using all motorways , I see the odd one , but very rare .
I see far more cars driving straight through the red x ( closed lane on motorways) , using the hard shoulder as a running lane to exit the motorway ,3/5 miles ahead .
And worst of all a motorcyclist who thought it was fine doing a wheelie away from every junction the other day , whilst him and his passenger didn’t wear helmets !!
But I will cb my lorry driving mates & make sure they leave plenty of room for op , I’m sure his journey is far more important than anyone else’s 🙄

I'm noticing it too. Travel across the country for work and it's everywhere that smart motorways are.
