Save London Motorcycling are taking legal action against Hackney's proposed ridiculous bike parking charges of £10 / day for commuters and new proposals for bike parking permits - from £50 for electric bikes up to £596 / yr for certain petrol bikes.

To me this seems like an ideolgical punishment beating disguised as greenwashing - when we all know that actually encouraging people to ride bikes would solve many issues and offer people a cheaper and more convenient transport alternative.

Multiple scooters and certain bikes have a lower per passenger / per km Co2 output than TFL's official data for their bus fleet.

Having been through various processes to push back (including encouraging a large opposing consultation), SLMC is now taking legal action. The court has agreed to cap adverse costs, which is great, but they are not at the target level yet.

SLMC would very gratefully receive any support.

Serious question though. How are bikes any more environmentally friendly than cars? (Ignoring buses and filtering/congestion for a minute, as we don't all live in London)

My bikes get about the same fuel consumption as my old golf, plus everyone likes to decat their bikes too. Given that many cars are single occupant, doesn't that make bikes just as bad as cars?

His post is specifically about commuting into London and councils puting up the parking charges

Forget your extra urban mpg for a sec. Bike are lighter so use less in stop start traffic, and you have less stop start because you can make progress where cars can't. Being lighter you also cause less damage to roads, create less polluting brake and tyre particles. Bikes use less steel in manufacturing so are more environmentally friendly to produce. They are smaller so parking space can be minimised.

Getting folk on two wheels (motorised or not) on the London commute is the way forward.
Train is crap and over crowded, the car is a waste of time.
Bike parking was free for years in town.

I guess we’re the next up for being taxed in this ‘green way’
