Anyone else done this? don’t know why I did really but it does work.

Basically bought a van that came with a wheelchair lift with 400kg max, and modified.

I've considered it - both when looking at ex ambulances which come with similar and modifying similar to use with a high pick up

There's quite a clever "self loading ramp" made by Neodyne but it's £2400 - I've thought about building something like that too

Instead I bought a really wide, really long ramp which works well (approx 2'x8') but can be extended to 4x8

I considered it when building my campervan but decided the lift itself weighed too much compared to the benefit it brings.

Looked at it when we use to do trackdays but a full width folding ramp took up less room and didn’t need electric and left space in the van other options

Agreed, should just wheelie-bunny-hop in… or have gotten a ramp.

To be fair, a proper ramp is £800, modifying the wheelchair lift was £100.

What's a proper ramp? 90% of the guys I see loading bikes in vans use a £50 ramp...

Wow... With the amount of 600lb bikes I've manhandled into vans and pick ups over the years, I can certainly appreciate the attractions of that. And if you managed to modify it for the figure quoted, fair play to you. Worth every penny, I'd imagine. Nice job.
The best trick I learned when loading was to have two ramps side by side, one for the bike and the other to walk up, completely changes the game (or to have bikes that weigh less than a small house).

I always thought the old VW based Razorback was a good idea for moving bikes but I don't think they sold that well:

I've only seen them on VW T4s before.

Quite a few have been cut down into pickups

Not a bad idea but limits the loading weight and I'd imagine quite an expensive conversion
