Hi chaps and chapesses!

Does anyone have any experience of removing the threaded insert from some GSXR600 (SRAD) clip-ons?

I would like to fit a brake lever guard with the expanding bolt type fitting but I cannot remove the insert.

Please see pictures below.

Thank you smile

I'd say thread a bolt in for a couple of turns and they should tap out, but no direct experience!

Just remoe the expander and use a standard bolt to screw it into the bar end.

Just a thought. On bmx bar ends you had to loosen the bolt/screw out a but then chap it inwards to move the wedge that causes it to expand and grip inwards so the legs can then move in.
So you could then pull them out.

Looking at the new guards it is the same set up if you had to remove them.

Yep. That’s what I’ve done.

Yes, I think this is the only option - I am a bit worried that if at the track day they press the guard, it can swivel up and down without too much force and they may not allow me on track.

There is a video on a Honda below, I'm not sure how the SRAD inserts are retained in the bar though?

I'd love to remove the threaded insert, so if there are any SRAD experts lurking then please let me know smile

Alloy plug inside steel tube = galvanic corrosion.

That's going to be pretty much welded in there unfortunately.

I did exactly that on my SRAD, the guard does not swivel unless you really press on it, and nobody did more than a quick visual check on any trackdays I've been to anyway...

No direct experience with that one but similar ones are generally threaded into the bars

So insert a bolt with a nut on it, lock the nut and use the bolt to try to turn the entire assembly out

When that inevitably doesn't work, buy a 13mm drill bit off ebay and drill the bd out biggrin

Especially on a bike as old as an SRAD.

Thanks Alex,

Yes I will go for this option and thanks for confirming that they don't check them too closely on a trackday smile

Ps, I am using a basic Oxford guard but if there is a better one for the SRAD then please let me know thumbup

Thanks KTMsm,

I was tempted to drill it out biggrin but I've gone with the longer bolt option, not ideal but should do the job!

I did some searching on eBay for standard clip-ons and it looks to be pressed in?

I bought an M6 x 50mm bolt and some washers and when nipped up seems tight enough to pass any scruntineering (or even better just a visual check wink)

Thanks everyone beer
