Was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me on improving the sensation of speed with onboard trackday footage?
I am in no way a photographer/videographer. I have a GoPro Hero 11 mini, I have never touched a setting on it. It’s fitted next to my windscreen and just hit ‘record’ when I leave the pits.
Trouble is the videos always look really slow and composed, the video stabilisation over my old GoPro Session 5 seems to have made things worse still.
Was wondering if there were any lenses or settings etc to just give that sensation of speed I’m after.
Not sure if YouTube links are allowed here but some examples would be nice too if possible?

I find footage from car or bike track days looks slow regardless of how fast you are lapping. On short circuits there is no real point of reference, no detailed scenery flying past. 150mph may feel fast on the bike but then you look at the footage and you may has well have been doing 50mph. Im sure if you went down your local high street at double the speed limit it would look more exciting wink

The novelty of having a GoPro wore off a long time ago for me, I dont bother recording on holidays either. I never have time to review it all.

It's all about the lens. Wide angle lenses found on most action cameras are very wide angle which has the effect of making things look slower.
If you can find a bullet cam system with different lens options that could be a better option

Have a look at Niccolo Canepa's YouTube channel and see what camera he uses. Whatever set up he uses seems to have a decent sensation of speed.

He is also fking fast which might be what's doing it.

It’s all about introducing peripheral motion blur, use an ND filter to bring the shutter speed down to 25-30fps

I use an assortment tbh with trackdays and racing.

Go pro 11 black mini and insta360 X2. The insta 360 captures the best for speed and action imo, especially good for racing.

An example of the Insta 360 X2 just having fun on a trackdays.

They look great! Is that just how a insta 360 films or have you changed setting etc? Where have you got that mounted to also give you some of the bike in shot? Also great riding I must say.
Much more exciting than my footage:

Seem a few videos with a view from in the helmet which also looks great

I’m sure I saw a video on Instagram mentioning this sort of thing but couldn’t find it again!
I’ll look into this. Luckily I have a road bike I can try it out on.

Cheers

I was at Snetterton on the 26th, thankfully it dried up and had a lovely dry day after first two sessions.

The camera was mounted on the Air box on the R1 for the Oulton Park footage, was our first time there so lines are all over the place 😂 good fun circuit though can't wait to go back.

For Cadwell is was mounted on the left hand side high on the front, in regards to the footage, all I've done is increase the FOV to get the bits of the bike in I wanted, the rest is as it comes.

The software is pretty intuitive to use and has loads of ability.

Definitely worth looking at, another positive with with the 360 is too can see where your neutral phasing on the bike (even when you're positive you aren't 😂) helps cut down on lap times and improve I've found.
