After some man maths taking me from keeping my bike to a new S1000R , to then looking at an M1000R and pounding the dealers for the best deal possible, I've changed my old S1000R to a new M1000R, the bike was delivered 10 days or so ago.

Unfortunately around delivery day, I become unwell so with that and the recent weather , I've only been out on it a handful of times and covered 360ish miles.

I did take one of these out last May but at the time, I wasn't serious about buying one , just wanted to see what all the hype was about, so never really fully investigated the bike, thinking it too focused and too expensive .

After watching many reviews and taking onboard all the positives and negative comment about the bike, I decided to take 2 x M1000Rs out from 2 different dealers for long test rides ( 4 hours each time) and make my own mind up,

The dealers showed me how to adjust the suspension settings and other elements of the bike, I rode on everything from motorways and smaller country roads and rode both a Comp (black version with all the carbon/carbon wheels) and non comp bike.

Because im an old(er) git comfort is really important and my road bike has to be comfy as well as fun/practical.

Cotswold Mottard managed to get the price down on a non competition model to below a fully speced up S1000R and offered me a cracking PX on my old S1000R (which needed tyres, brake pads and a service looming...)

Running it in isn't proving to be that much of a chore , there is enough revs/poke to make anything away from a dual carriageway fun, motor aside, the brakes and handling are a serious step up from my older model, the electronics and dash are , from my experience, the best i've tried , along with 25mm bar risers and with the higher seat and suspension adjustments, its , for me, a near perfect ride .

A bit controversial for some but I wasn't a fan of the wings, too big and too ugly, in general I dont mind wings on bikes, id love them on the H2 but with the external fixing screws, it all looks a bit of an afterthought so I've removed them and prefer the look ...you buy a big naked bike and expect/want high speed wheelies so no loss to me.

From the roadside, it is a bit quiet but from the saddle, as the revs rise , the airbox induction noise and pipe come through, along with some pops and bangs depending on mode it is engaging and exciting , I may well change the can for something a little fruitier thou

Run in service early August , cant wait for that ..

Wing on...

Off.....

Nice write up. I agree, it looks too me, much better without the wings fitted.

Enjoy it Bryan.

Infinitely better without those ridiculous wings.

Looking forward to hearing how you in particular get on with the bike, it should have been a natural fit for me, but I just couldn’t gel with the bike at all when I test rode one.

Hope it makes you giggle every ride!

Good idea to lose the wings?

I love that BMW colour scheme

What are the vibrations through the bars like? I had an S1000R and really liked it except that the vibrations meant the wing mirrors were useless most of the time and my fingers went numb after a while.

I dont have an issue with the vibes at all, I know its some have said about it in the reviews but not an issue for me….however the mirrors I can confirm are terrible, I dont know how BMW signed off on them, you cannot make out anything behind you past 70MPH but the good news is plenty of reportedly good options out there,
I have mine , just need to fit them.

Thanks for all the good wishes.

Good choice removing those winglets, they look utterly ridiculous on a naked bike.

Think this will be my next bike when they start coming onto the second hand market in more numbers. Looks great.

Do the risers get the bars back to the same height as the S1000R?

I believe they are now higher than an S1000R…and you can get higher risers still (35mm) and change the bars if you wish.

Morning Bryan,

I've had my M1000R for a few months now, and it's just a great bike to ride. Makes me chuckle every time I'm on it, which is what it's all about. I had a 1250GSA for about 6 months to see what the fuss was about, and honestly. it was a bit rubbish. Couldn't bond with it, so the M1000R seemed like a sensible next step. smile

Enjoy it, and if ever you fancy a Midlands meet, let me know.

Cheers
Matt

The M1R is brilliant. Absolutely love it and having a giggle every time I ride it. Grandborough isn't too far away, so that could be a plan. I take it that it;'s the 21st of this month? If I'm not being a parent, I'll make it over.

Great bike OP. I Love these, probably my next bike purchase in a couple of years.

Looks great either way but I'm a fan of the wings personally, this bike gets away with it given its pedigree for me but totally understand the point regarding it being a naked bike.
