I’m in the process of obtaining a full motorbike licence via the DAS.

Currently full car driving licence for 17 years.
CBT test booked 2nd July
Theory 10th July
DAS course August

I’m looking at using a 125cc motorbike on L plates in between the CBT test and the DAS course.
Im looking at insuring the 125cc from the 2nd July however I’m unsure exactly what to put in the quote.

Quote question “ What type of motorbike licence do you have?

Answer = provisional

“ how many years have you held your licence”

I think I put 30/01/2015, or should I be putting 16/10/07?

Secondly I understand that i can ride a 125cc on L plates as long as I’ve passed the CBT, so shouldn’t my licence show the same on A1 as it does on AM with the 122 restriction?

79(3) means 'restricted to tricycles'.

You can drive Reliant on your car licence without L plates.

Provisional entitlement to drive other classes, i.e. ride a bike with L plates is not AFAIK listed on your licence?
The list of codes does not seem to include 'with L plates'?

So what do you think I should enter as for the how long have you had your licence?

Full car licence = 16/10/07
AM Valid from 30/10/15
A (79) valid from 19/01/13

Technically id have thought it would have been from
The date I obtained the licence in 2007, but I find this confusing.

I will perhaps call the insurance company, but as this is a comparison website I don’t know which company will be cheapest until I complete the quote

I’ve just looked at my licence online, under the provisional section it says this

I think this covers 125cc, however what then throws me is it states “A” not “A1”

I passed my motorcycle test in the last century. I have A on my photocard.

That photocard shows you have a full motorcycle entitlement. Whether you do or not may be another matter.

I think what it shows is I’m entitled to drive big cc engines, but that’s it’s restricted to trikes

Outintheshed explains the restriction. Mine doesn't have that.

If you haven’t yet obtained your licence to ride a 125cc bike then you would use the date from which you obtained the licence to allow you to ride the bike?
So in your case, this would be July 2024?
At least that’s how I have interpreted the insurance question. It usually asks what licence you have, followed by the date you got the licence, so this is the date to use, rather than the dates shown on your current licence.

But as of right now, on a provisional I don’t actually apply or receive a licence.

My interpretation is that I’ve held the provisional bike licence ever since I’ve held my current licence, as it is that which I am using, even after the CBT in July.

Once I pass the test after the DAS course in August and gain a full licence, then I should then use that date moving forwards.

That is how I read it at least

The date you pass your cbt is the date you're looking for.

I’ve phoned the insurance company just now and asked the question,

She confirmed the date they want is the date i passed my driving test, in this case 2007, and once i get my full drivers licence the years held will reset to 0
