Having spent over £600 getting my FireBlade fixed after some fkers tried to nick it in Sheffield, I'm reluctant to take it somewhere unsafe. I've got a work trip to Gosforth in Newcastle next month and it would probably be a really fun ride from Glasgow - I can use the bike for business use.

However, I don't know the area that well. I've got a chuffing great lock and chain to lock it to something - but is Gosforth likely to be full of neds who are going to have a go or should it likely be OK?

Where in Gosforth will you be parking it at?

Like anywhere, there will be some areas where it will be safe as houses, and others where it will be gone in the blink of an eye.

If you’re at the Regent Center there should be somewhere safe to park it there, but it’s been a good number of years since I worked there so the parking situation may have changed so I couldn’t say for sure.

Gosforth is one of the more well to do areas of Newcastle. It's full of Doctors and Solicitors. You can never be too safe anywhere so take precautions, but you should be fine there. Elswick on the other hand...

Let's just say it's near the Regent Centre, yes. I'd much rather ride than take the train

I used to live in London. I don't park bikes just on the steering lock!

Not Gosforth, but I had a weekend in Newcastle about a month ago and left my bike parked up all weekend in the "gate" shopping centre.

Found a spot under 2/3 CCTV cameras, disc lock... and was safe enough.

Only cost £3 for the whole weekend too!

I used to make that journey once a week until the first lockdown put a stop to it and I would take the car personally.

M74 and then the A69 is pretty boring with lots of double whites, poor surfaces and a few speed cameras thrown in for good measure. Not fireblade territory if you ask me.

that'd be where you are going wrong. On a bike ( or fast car) you'd head over to Edinburgh, then take the A68 - A696 Coldstream road. Now that would be fun.

Indeed, a good route. I would prefer Peebles, Selkirk, Hawick, Otterburn. Some spectacular riding there, if a little stop-start north of the border.

In reality you should be ok in leafy Gosforth but for peace of mind I agree the underground Gate car park in central Newcastle is a good shout and full of people on leisure pursuits. Nothing can be seen from ground level and you'd have to pass several CCTV cameras to get in and out, both on foot and vehicle. I can't imagine anyone getting their angle grinder out in there.

The best place is the fob-to-open cage in Eldon Garden car park but you need to pay £15 for a fob and make an appointment to pick it up from a council employee, so not particularly convenient for a one-off trip.

There’s free motorbike parking at the Freeman hospital, which might be close enough for you.

Thanks everyone. Plan was indeed to go via Peebles and Hawick, but the buggers have shifted it to digital so no chance for a thrash
