I've seen a lot of posts recently where bikes are absolutely covered in rider, passenger and luggage to the point they look massively overloaded. Read a bit about shock shafts even snapping as well.

I also distinctly remember the phrase "GS riders and their fat wives" being uttered on here!

Does anyone pay any attention to the carrying capacity or just say fk it? Surely there must be some kind of safety margin built in?

Most bikes end up well overloaded with pillion plus luggage, very few people pay any attention to the manufacturers specifications unfortunately.

I guy I knew who was traffic plod told me that it's something that gets considered if a motorcycle is involved in an accident where someone is killed or seriously injured but generally, as long as nothing is hanging off the bike and it doesn't look ridiculously unsafe, they just turn a blind eye.

He also said that German tourists on BMW's were the worst ( or was that the wurst... getmecoat )

That's something I've always paid attention to but not always adhered to. I have a 1200 GS adv, the top box says only 5kg payload but I have regularly double that with no problems, same for the ali cases, 20ish kg in each.

A guy I knew once said that he wasn't likely to be doing much bike stuff with his partner because once both of them were on the bike, that was 36 stone before luggage eek

I took a lady friend out for a local trip on my Speed Twin 900 and the bike went from quick and good handling to just no fun at all.

I remember giving my son, taller and heavier than me, a lift on a T-Max and it was a nightmare. Barely any weight on the front wheel and no control.

When we got to his destination I asked if he had enjoyed the ride.

'No' he said 'Cos I could hear you yelling that we were going to fekin' die!'

The payload of the GS1200 was 216kgs, so easy to exceed with mature rider+ spouse + 3 piece luggage, which is the target customer.

You are meant to huddle up to the pilot like a 2nd skin. If you do bellend in wrong sized lid leaning back, it really affects things lol.

I think it’s mainly poor people who have fat wives, so more those with CB500s than GSs

I’m sure yours is a size eight, so apologies for generalising.

I’m sure you’re aware though of the data;

Nice try at justification but firstly, a locked article holds no weight in an argument if the other person cannot see the 'proof' you are relying on (y'see what I did there?).

Secondly, the article only draws a comparison between her weight and her own wealth; if she was independently wealthy, she would be on her own bike and not the pillion of someone else's.

Thirdly, the article makes no mention of motorcycles at all.

Just admit it, you're a weightist snob.

I’m not the one who decided to jump in and call people’s wives fat, but yes, I do have a strong preference against land whales.

I don’t think that it’s that uncommon.

If you like heavier ladies then of course that’s fine too.

But that is in fact exactly what you did.

You seem to rub people up the wrong way as much as I do Ken. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear you went to the same secondary School as I did!

I'm not quite sure how this fits into the matrix of fat wives and disposable income, but I'm gay and have electrically adjustable dampers.
