I have been looking at a Vstrom 1050 to replace my Mt07 (first bike). Anyone care to give me the benefit of their experience of ownership. Comfort. Handling. Issues etc.

Solid bike

Agricultural yet dependable engine, will last forever

Will never light anyone's fires when it comes to riding, but will get you from A to B without a second look from anyone (apart from a couple of colour schemes maybe)

Bit tall for some, as most adventure style bikes

More of a road-going bike than an ADV

Like some other big twins, very sensitive to low voltage or old batteries

Well priced if you don't pay ridiculous RRPs (no-one does)

In summary, built to a price (suspension notably) but a decent bike if it suits your riding and you don't mind it's looks.

I bought a 2021 1050XT after deliberating for months over various adv bikes (KTM, Ducati, BMW etc).

I honestly can't say a bad thing about it at all.

Handles beautifully, can't quite understand how they managed it on such a large, gangly bike.

Fueling is the smoothest I've ever experienced on any bike.

Very comfortable. 300 mile days with no issue.

VERY difficult to get it to average below 55mpg.

250 miles plus per tank.

Great engine with perfect real world power.

Brilliant electronics. Hill hold, cruise and cornering ABS are fantastic. I'll never buy another "main" bike without cornering ABS again.

The suspension isn't brilliant but isn't terrible either. I'm still deliberating on a Nitron shock for it.

Somehow even with a 60hp deficit compared to my previous VFR1200F I ride this CONSIDERABLY quicker without any effort.

The cherry on top is that I know with as much certainty as i can that it'll never breakdown - something that categorically can't be said for KTM etc......

Some will bemoan them as boring or dull but you're getting a bike that simply works. I don't lay awake at night wondering what the odd clunk or knock meant like I have with various European crap before.

Look at the Lav and Ollie YouTube series where they went round the world on it and NOTHING failed apart from consumables. It took an absolutely enormous amount of abuse and kept soldering on.

That's not exactly a big day.

I would be much more impressed if you did twice that without a sore arse or leg-cramp.

I'm so sorry Mr internet stranger, did I just piss on your chips?

Wind your neck in son, there's guys on here who regularly do 600-800 miles in a day to get where they want to be.

Funnily enough, no one really cares whether you are impressed or inspired, my original comment was that 300 miles isn't exactly a big day; if it is to you then all I can really say is "aw, bless."

Total distance doesn’t always tell the whole story.

300 miles without a break is good,600 miles having to stop every hour for a break isn’t.

Keep going, maybe you can call him "fella" in your next patronising reply?

Oh, was I being patronising?
I hadn't realised.

I mean, you do know what patronising means, don't you?

Distance doesn't mean much. Could be 600 miles on motorways vs 300 miles on B and unclassified roads.

Who did you go with and what's your age?

Lexham were the only ones even remotely reasonable for me. Bikesure wouldn't even quote me.

Just did mcn quote online. I am 57. Having only passed my test 1 year ago. Only two companies quoted. One of which is my current insurer who wanted over 4.5k. My current insurance on my mt07 was 700
