I just went on to the Motorcycle News site to advertise my bike, and they don’t do private adverts.

I’ve stuck it on Auto Trader but is there anywhere else that makes sense to use.

It’s a road bike, advertised at £8,000. I’ll not be any more specific so my post doesn’t get taken down.

I’d advertise here, but they don’t seem to do bikes.

eBay, Facebook (both general and marque-specific sales groups)

Thanks, I hadn’t thought of eBay.

Relevant Facebook group page(s). Put my 996 on there and had loads of interest straightaway, sold in a few days….some for bike parts , just been buying stuff for my new bike and selling the old as well.

I’ll have a check if there’s an owner’s group on there, thanks.

I've sold two on GumTree recently, both to people who were some distance from me.

I'd advertised on eBay and Facebook as well. eBay got less interest and Facebook got a steady stream of "what's your best price" despite me explicitly saying that the price was the price.

And GumTree has no fee.

I have had good experience in both buying and selling using Facebook Marketplace and then selected groups/pages. The fact it is free to list is a big plus in my opinion. I did also sell a Fireblade on eBay recently which generated more interest on there than Facebook. I think between eBay and Facebook you have all bases covered personally.

IME A.Trader gets the best results

Ebay classified ads are a close second

Gumtree is dire

FB Marketplace is worse

The owners groups are ok if you either have the best one or the cheapest one

However the market is very quiet, I'm seeing loads of bargains and they aren't selling week after week

I suspect if I knocked the £1000+ that a trader wanted to charge me that it’d sell immediately. I’ll see if I get any (serious) interest from the other methods and if not try a dealer.

If it's a bit special, consider owner's club website.
Owners forum?

it costs nothing to try Gumtree.

Where would you look if you were buying?
Facebook is generally a swamp, but some specialist selling pages are OK.

A few people I know have sold bikes via a dealer, the dealer displays the bike and takes a cut if it sells.

I'd agree. I sold on auto trader but to the trade. I had 5 trade offers in the first week and not even a private enquiry. It was an expensive bike though.

I bought through eBay privately. I did make enquiries with 4 or 5 dealers and they'd only drop prices by a hundred quid or so on a 11k bike.I told them I'd buy at a specific price which was 300-500 less than advertised. They're all still for sale a couple of weeks later.

I’ve never bought a used bike, and the last time I sold one it went in MCN.

At risk of having the thread zapped it’s a Husqvarna 701 Supermoto. A bit niche, but not really exotic.

£10,500 buys you a new one, £7,000 gets you the cheapest one from the same year, with 13,000 miles on it.

I’m asking a bit under £8,000 for my under 300 mile one. I think that’s reasonably priced, but it’s hard to tell.

Got you. It’s up there and hopefully at a sensible price to sell.

MCN doesn't do private adverts? I used to spend a good couple of hours with it every Wednesday back in the day spotting potential bargain buys. All those CBs, GPZs, GSs, FJs and FZs, often only 4 or 5 years old but already totally shagged.

The last time I used it they actually printed the advert in the paper that people went to the show and bought.

It felt a bit discombobulating getting the stark “what year do you think this is grandad” message.

Of the free sites

Gumtree is less popular but tends to get decent buyers.

Facebook has loads of "wots ur best price m8", people who'll turn up then want £500 of the price for no reason, and outright scammers, but your bike might sell faster than Gumtree.

Of the paid sites

Ebay is okay, but costly in fees.

Auto-trader cheaper, less traffic. Competing against a lot of dealers and well prepped bikes.

I think that I pitched it at the level of “a bit of a bargain but not cheap enough to seem dodgy” on Autotrader and have had precisely zero interest.
