Confusing for some reason. Annoying that I can't see the boxes I'd like in reality, in a shop, especially as they are not cheap but I did have a box years ago and thought that it was good stuff and I liked the method of attachment.

Thought last night, hang the expense, just order.

Givi site is great, put in your bike and what you'd like and it's all there.

Except you can't buy it. You have to find a dealer.

Next bit of confusion as on the Givi site it says the plate comes with whatever box I order but looking at dealer websites, you have to order it separately.

Anyone know which is correct?

Give "Hepco & Becker" a call....
The guy there told me exactly what I needed for my KTM, made up the order and then took my card details....
Very good quaity and a lot cheaper than Givi. When I lost a topbox key they supplied a replacement at a very good price!!

I'd advocate buying the specific rack for your bike new, and just get a second hand box off eBay. There's usually loads of choice at a fraction of the new cost. Buy the mounting plate if you need to.

Agree, always lots of second hand boxes online. Order racks new if possible.

Good point chaps. The Givi rack is far cheaper than Triumph's own one.

Shame SW Motech don't do one for the Speed Twin 900 as the one on my Street Triple was ace.

Yep, I'll get the rack first and then look for a box on eBay.

Cheers.

I got a Givi setup for the Africa Twin, which has a mounting plate from the factory. I needed a Givi mounting plate to fit the box (fair enough), but also a fitting kit to fit the Givi mounting plate to the Honda mounting plate...

I've only bought one top box. Well, technically I've bought two, but Oxford's idea of "universal fitment" and my own differ, so it went straight back and I tried to buy a Givi using the information from their very useful website. Unfortunately my unusual choice of bike (one of those uncommon BMW things) meant no bugger in the UK had the adapter to attach the top box to the (obviously extremely rare) factory rack, excepting scalpers on Amazon charging exhorbitant rates.

So I looked at Shad as, looking around, plenty of people seemed happy enough with them, and the boxes worked out a bit cheaper than similar Givi. But alas, stupid boy trying to attach hard luggage to a sports tourer, no one had the adapter for my bike, or even a lead time. Except, when I was on shad.co.uk working out what fitting kit I actually needed, would you believe it, not only did they actually list the part, but also a price and, better yet, they even had the thing in stock! Ordered the adapter from them and the box from SBS, both turned up a couple of days later, job jobbed.

The adapter was a third the price Givi would want too.

Try NativeViking seller on ebay. He has Givi boxes and rack for Speed Twin in stock.

I bought a set for my Tiger 1050 last year and he made up exactly the set I wanted.

Great guy to deal with.

Cheers.

I've just sold a load of old but barely used Kreiga stuff on eBay and got a surprising load of cash for them.

So I may splash out but will check out the Shad stuff too.

Bear in mind with Givi there's 2 system, Monolock and Monokey, and they're not compatible so make sure you're looking at the right plate for the luggage you want.

If you're looking at side panniers there's also the V system which contoured to get a bit more space, while the other ones have a flat back.

They're well made but expensive, and there's a good second hand market as a lot of people tend to sell them separately from the bike.

I bought mine from Sports Bike Shop and they were very helpful.

If you want to see before you buy, you can get 2 or 3 delivered to your local SBS, go there, take a look and they’ll send back the ones you don’t want.

For my KTM, I bought the official KTM aluminium bracket which comes with a plain ali plate, and then I bought a cheap top box from the bay of fleas. I then drilled holes in the top box to match with the holes in the ali top plate and bolted it down with large washers on both sides oif the plastic base of the box.

This has numerous advantages: It can't be stolen without unbolting it, it's not going to come off on the motorway, it's positioned much lower and further forward for much better weight distribution and it's much more stable. Also means I don't need to buy expensive mounting plates. I use a couple of dry bags inside if there's anything I need ti take with me into a hotel.

I can also buy smaller or larger top cases without having to buy all the accessories for it. Win win win for me. Only downside is the lock isn't matched to the bike or panniers and the styling looks different from the bike.

Reminds me of my courier days in the 80s. Cheap plastic box, holes made in the bottom with a hot screwdriver, bolt to rack.

Some just bungied the box to the back of the saddle smile

I went Givi on my KTM, primarily because I could use their combined top box and U-lock mount which means you don't have a heavy lock bouncing around inside your top box.

I got the bits from sportsbikeshop

Worth noting it needs a large U-Lock though, I ended up ordering one from France where they appear to have a better selection, due to their SRA homologation requirements.

I actually found the opposite with the Tiger 900. The OEM Triumph one just needed the rack and the box, the Givi one needed the rack, a special plate, and the box, which was more expensive in total.

You order the plate separately & there are choices. The M5 plastic one is usually the least cost option.

I was driving along an A road near me last week, and thought "what's that in the road?" as I approached something large and black. Turned out to be a top box, so I stopped to remove it in case anyone else clattered it.

When I looked, it had previously been fixed to the bike in question with.......three thin cable ties yikes

The box was open, but no key obv. I brought it home rather than leave it for someone to nick it (or for it to get knocked back into the road and cause a sh|tcart), and posted on the local SM pages that I had it if anyone wanted to recover it. In hindsight possibly not the best move; I'm now stuck with a top box I don't want, and the owner may well have gone back along the road looking for it.

So yeah, buy the right mounts hehe

(PS if anyone here wants it, it's scuffed up but not broken but you're welcome to it. Can't remember the make. Not a well-known make, possibly begins with H? It's outside and I'm not going to look now!)

Like others had said, get the rack for your bike new and buy the luggage used.

When you do, be aware that there are two different fitment types MonoKey and MonoLock.

Key takes a bit more weight and tends to have larger boxes. The Lock ones tend to be a bit lighter. And you can't swap between Key and Lock, on the same mounting plate.

Seems the way to go.

I really don't like the plastic Givi universal plate that attaches to an old school tubular rack that they, and others make for the Triumph.

I see Triumph do a rack that's just a hoop with two plates with two holes each so you can attach their mounting plate.

Thus the rack can't be used just as a rack if you get what I mean.

It's only £98. I see Motech do a nice aluminium plate for their Trax boxes that has some adjustments in where the bolts go.

So all I need is a template of the Triumph rack and then to be able to see the Motech plate for real.

But virtually impossible as everything is online, to be ordered or abroad.

I may well do what I did in the 80s. Get the Triumph jobby, buy a cheap box, sit it on the back, mark the holes, drill then just bolt it on hehe

Start at the beginning, which box are you looking at?

Edit, for that bike (Speed Twin 900) looks to me like you need an SR6407 rack with an E251 plate regardless of which Givi box you use.
