I've never really considered these before but they look to be a hell of a lot of fun for the money! Considering booking a test ride on one when the weather picks up a bit. Currently on a 17' GSXS1000 which I absolutely love and obviously this would be down on power a bit compared but I think in the real world the way the power is delivered can often be as if not more important.

Has anyone had a go on one yet and if so what are your thoughts?

They do look great, tough market though with the Triumph Street Triple, Ducati Monster and Tuono 660 all similar price and performance.

I shouldn't be looking but watched some reviews lastnight and some of the TimmyWoo the former Top Gear PHer review of the Street Triple 765R and Emma Deputy MCN Editors long term test of her Street Triple 765RS in which said she'd go for the R despite being tempted by a Moto 2 after a lap and a bit at Silverstone but I am sworn off Triumphs after welching on a deal to buy a lightly used Trident 660 in Autumn 2022 due to the stalling and cutting out issues and a lack of Recall or TSB.

This new MT-09 seems quite KTM 790/890 Duke like in the riding the front wheel riding position and styling.

The Iron Man headlamp arrangement is different from the Cyclops projector of the last model MT-09.

Having seen this thread I wonder if there's going to be a revamped XSR with the mechanical changes to the MT-09? That would get around the Iron Man headlamp styling.

I wouldn't go Triumph again after my experience with my last Speed Triple. I've also ridden a 790 Duke and wasn't that impressed with the finish of it.

I think these are worth a look. I will be taking my 10 year old lad on the back so need to see what the pillion situation is like but I can't see it being a great deal different to my current bike and it will be just me 90% of the time anyway.

My pal has the 23 model SP. He's had every bike under the sun pretty much and churns them regularly. He loves the SP and reckons it's a keeper. Depends what you you use them for I guess, but as a day ride bike they're pretty up there. The engine is not only full of grunt, it has a lot of character. Nice thing

I know a lot of people love triples but they aren’t for everyone. I find them not as good as a 4 or v twin rather than a best of both worlds.

My experience was a 765rs and I’d also never have another triumph.

I've not had the best experiences with Triumph, although the bikes when working at least, are great.

Ridden pretty much every generation of the MT09 and it's up there with one of most enjoyable rides, styling is subjective of course but the engine is a peach, bags of torque, good top end power and sounds fantastic with a full system.

Also loads of fun on track, did a few sessions on a gen 2 in Carta, laughed my ass off every lap.

Definitely where my money would be going if I was in the market.

I really appreciate that these are still made it Japan. I know it does not matter to some, but to me it’s a big consideration.

Hence why I went with a Ducati Scrambler.

I am looking at a second bike, something with a bit more go. A CP3 engined bike is top of the list.

You may want to check out the 'Made in Japan' Many UK /European Yamaha motorcycles and Mopeds are made in France. I have not ridden the latest MT09 but here is my Gen 1 Tracer Police SP which was at least assembled in France.

Thankfully all CP3 based models are still made in Japan.

It's true that some CP2 and scooter models are made in France (and that the Police TRACER 9 is modified from the standard model there). But anyway the processes are standardized across factories, so quality based on production location is rarely noticeable.

The 2024 MT-09 seems to be getting glowing reviews, worth a test ride to see what's behind the journalist bluster. The supposed improved front end feel and suspension changes seem to address some previous complaints.

Yeah I get this and seen it said before. I've only had 2 triples - a Benelli Tre 900 and a MV Dragster 800. Both times found the sound amazing but its a funny ol' power curve. Cant rev it out like an IL4 but wont hit hard like a big twin low to mid. They are fairly linear power though

I’m really fancying the old model SP (’21 on), the reviews are fantastic. Yeah the front headlight is weird but I think I could look past that smile

I rode the 2023 MT09SP in October last year and bloody loved it. The new one looks like it fixes the things I didn't really like (lack of weight over the front, slightly too upright riding position). That CP3 engine is great, and it feels as naughty as my MT10, but in a different way… and at slightly lower speeds, albeit still faster than you're meant to go.

New one is £10,100 which is only a few hundred quid more than a Street Triple R. I've just handed back a Street Triple R and really loved it – it feels marginally better finished than the Yamaha, but the quickshifter/blipper on the press bike I had would stop working after 20 mins on every ride.

The MT09's engine pulls harder and has a bigger instant hit than the 765, but then it's 125cc bigger than the Triumph. Triumph feels more stable leant over, but on the roads the MT09 is more of a giggle, for me at least.

Is the Tracer 9 just an MT with a fairing or has the engine or suspension been modified for the sport tourer?

I'm looking at "adventure" options but the Tracer9 is a leftfield choice for me at the moment.

I don't know if the XSR900 will be updated with some of the changes made to the 2024 MT-09 but I think the XSR has the Tracer 9 swingarm which I think is longer.

There's a couple of long term test reviews on MCN about them. I found the one with Alison useful as it chimed with my manual handling concerns, many of which stem from the inclines to and from the garage I have access to.
