I just had a new exhaust made from my bike. I have just been asked to agree that the new one, (as it does not have a cat and maybe louder), will not be used on the road.
This seems to be new legislation; has anyone else come across this?

Be related to companies being challenged legally for fitting modifications which make a vehicle "illeagal". Seller just covering themselves.

Have a look at this https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld200304/ldl...

E marked and not for road use stampings have been a thing for years.

Reality is unless you are unlucky and get pulled by a grumpy plod and fail the attitude test you'll be OK.

Same goes for a grumpy MOT tester putting an advisory on it.

You'll need to tell your insurance of course which may or may not be a problem / cost you more.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I have let the insurance know, as there is a custom one on there now. Just never been emailed and asked to make a statement.

I saw this the other day on Facebook (Mono Motorcycles maybe???) with a war and peace explanation about it. I remember a car tuner got prosecuted not long ago for doing something like non road legal remaps or removing the CAT? The motorcycle page also said they would only do the change if the bike was taken away in a trailer or a van!

There is no emission based testing re MOTs for bikes so its a bit strange but you can't blame them for covering their backs.

DVSA are clamping down on suppliers selling non road legal stuff for road vehicles. Expect plenty more of it.

Google DVSA market intelligence usit annual report.

Also expect the MOT to catch up soon, and a lot more people to get nicked for illegal mods to exhausts.

I think several other companies have been prosecuted now with more on the way. It appears regs that haven’t been applied in the past now are being applied. Will affect everybody over the next few years with MoT changes on the way for bikes.

It is however illegal to modify your vehicle to make more noise, or to remove the catalytic converter. They can get you under construction and use regulations.
