Triumph Speed 400
Discussion
The good lady has decided to put down a deposit on a new Triumph Speed 400.
She looked at the KTM 390 Super Duke but decided on the Triumph.
Admit despite already owning a few bikes - I'm genuinely looking forward to the new Triumph arriving hopefully mid May.
Seems a cracking wee bike.

A wider, shorter radiator would've caught less mud but that would mess up the styling and Triumph family styling cues.
A wider radiator with more exposed ends would also be more vulnerable to inadvertent drops or offroad mishaps so......

Just got mine. It seems a well put together machine. Strong engine. Fast enough for most a and b road riding. Ok on the trails. Obviously needs tyres for trails.
How did you find the torque curve and low down thrust? The KTM Duke 390 low end shove tapped into to my inner hooligan as did the throttle adjustability of lines exiting roundabouts. I also liked the pops as standard on the overrun.

The review I read said it was tuned for top end power.
Sorry a link to a blog not the review I read that says the engine is tuned for revs rather than traditional thumper low end thrust:

The review to me read like that being set up for top end revs may mean the bike isn't as economical as a single tuned for low end torque. I am not a riding god, I like torque.

Am I right in thinking that the engine is practically identical to the KTM 390?
MCN says it's a new engine. It doesn't look like the KTM 390 engine and the cubic capacity is different. https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/new-bikes/triu...
Another difference would be riding position. The Duke 390 is a riding the front wheel forward biased riding position rather than neutral.

I have a 390 Adventure and I'd say the Triumph feels noticeably stronger down low than that bike, though it is lower geared as well. The KTM Duke 390 low end shove tapped into to my inner hooligan as did the throttle adjustability of lines exiting roundabouts. From what I can see the engine is the same in so many ways as the new 399cc 390 Duke engine (the adventure still gets the old 373cc engine). The Triumph and KTM both have the same bore and stroke and I'd just be amazed if the same factory is churning two identical but different engines.

Thank you. I was wrong. From what I can see the engine is the same in so many ways as the new 399cc 390 Duke engine (the adventure still gets the old 373cc engine). I hadn't realised the latest iteration of the 390 Duke had dropped the 373cc engine.
The lower gearing of the Triumph may help explain the review I read saying the fuel economy isn't that great for a small capacity single.

Great review! Man you really tested the limits of that front tyre, I was very surprised you didn't bin it around some of those muddy corners, well done!https://youtu.be/h9995Y4ZYZ8?si=buYQfHRj2vEp1TGv
