So what started off as a quick chat about mopeds, getting 50mph out of one and 110+mpg became a conversation of 'i wonder how they'd be off road' & 'can you imagine a load of us on intercom going through Wales off road'

Well here it begins. The challenge being it must stay under £500 with a trophy for cheapest and forfeit for most expensive

It's a group of 8 of us having all known each other since primary/secondary school including my youngest brother so we're all mid 30s to early 40s (aka me)

With cost of living and general fun things to do with an engine becoming expensive we wanted to see if it can be done. Three of the riders have never ridden before and have their CBTs booked January - one being a 5+ million influencer in their respected work industry

The idea started from me buying this Peugeot kisbee 50cc 4 stroke for £50 having being told it's all good just sat for last few years outside

I learnt quickly after picking up from London at night and getting home that this was not the case. Sump bolt hanging out, no oil, no battery (they did say it was flat/dead), burnt out starter relay amongst other things

The route will be 150+ miles of green laning - typically the routes we watched on YouTube seeing 4x4s etc going through

We've got accommodation for £25 a night, a new defender 130 8 seater to get up there along with a big top box for bike kit and car trailer to put all the peds on sideways and strap down

Working hard to keep the budget well under the £500 I started off with a starter relay £5, battery £20, front brake lever (original was ok but bent £10) & kickstart which was missing £15

Realising quickly the original engine had been run dry and bottom end was knackered I looked on eBay and found a replacement with similar mileage for £125 other side of the country

A call to a good friend (Company called DB Logistics) had him pickup amongst his multiple bike collection and deliveries every day and just added an extra £20 for diesel to make a slight diversion for me

Apologies some pics I grabbed from my social stories hence writing in them

Spent best part of a lunch until evening with another good friend who I have been riding with for years pulling old engine out, fitting new engine, flushing engine and gear oil and just generally going through everything (It's so much easier when you're doing this stuff with someone for speed and holding bits in place etc).

Did a bit you YT research and got the restrictions out from the CDI and clutch. Stock it'll do 28mph 45kmh. Now it'll do 50mph 75-80kmh. For the sake of £6-7 I might try a few different ball roller weights to see how it does with acceleration/top speed

Hearing it run for the first time strangely got me buzzing, I guess because it was in such a sorry state with green mould all over. I cleaned up and sprayed the mirrors, exhaust, rear brake and anything that was black and had gone dull or rusty

Then fitted a USB to charge my phone/nav and a gerbing hardwired glove power supply. That was a pig of a job and I couldn't find much info on what power the little alternator produces. Some quick maths with the gloves drawing a max 2.2a and usb stating upto 2a had me thinking that's probably about all its got

Front headlight will be changed from the stock 35w to led in the week which will save a bit there

Various dash bulbs didn't work again from sitting for years. Cleaned up everything I could and got the whole lot working again

Last jobs to do before I get it MOTd, taxed etc is a quad lock on dash, fresh tyres (these are 3/4 worn & 9 years old) so need to budget £90 a pair and that's it - done

Considering it's been down the road on right side I think with a bit of cleaning up it doesn't look too bad

My brother has gone opposite and has an absolute dog of a bike but mechanically seems fine... The dash made us laugh from the previous owner

The influencer rider who's doing their CBT went max budget new as possible on the hope it'll be reliable and no spend needed (or can be done as all the £500 used)

And one of our lot pulled a sneaky card as we said cannot be more than 50cc from which he managed to find a very nice 2 stroke version so will no doubt have near double the power of us

I'll update this once all bikes in Wales and we start videoing and getting pictures. It'll be very cold... Let's see how well others prepare their bikes and clothing!

Good idea from the lad getting the stroker. 50cc 4 strokes will need a push up a big hill (ex CBT instructor, had to plan routes very carefully sometimes!)

Amazed you can get a ped for unser £500 without dealing with the "If you know, you know" crew

Tyres are the key. we used to have Sat night moped racing at the enduro club, and guys were buying Gilera runner 180s with 45 hp to try to win, and i could still smoke em on my Yam Jog RR, still 50cc, but tuned to do a proper 50mph, and running these knobby winter tyres i got when working in Finland! !
Proper laugh!

Update Mid Jan & cheers for some sound advice so far. All being noted and will be used.

Everyone but one now has a ped bought. The rules were simple - price of ped, total price of parts/repairs and then total overall price

Still a few to be fixed like my brothers here https://youtube.com/shorts/nw27WsA3OYc?si=kH0CUoJ4...

I've blanked the names however in complete coincidence both my brother and I are identical in total price! (Prices rounded up to the pound)

There are a good combo of 2 stroke, 4 stroke euro 3 carb and 4 stroke euro 4 electronic carb (These are much smoother but a pig to derestrict). All 2 strokes & euro 3 peds we have derestricted. Its basically those direct bike ones so a heads up if anyone is thinking of buying as a run-around

Starting to get a list of things/essential to take. Anything you think please put on here. Obviously we have a space and weight restriction as there isn't much we can carry

We will have a few challenges & posh plastic gold ebay trophies, again any ideas that you think we could actually do give some feedback

Mines working great. Been riding it to work and gets a solid 72kmh (45ish mph) on a slight incline and 80kmh on a flat or slight decline (50mph)

Fitted a quadlock & LED lights to try make it a bit more practical

Gerbing heated gloves & USB phone charger both work fine. Think I might need to put something under sump/bellypan of the ped in case I hit rocks hard and few of us looking at sealing the airbox & fitting a snorkel on front scoop and raising to rear seat for the 1ft+ water

2 Peds are under 3 years old, 2 have a valid mot & 3 got completed mid Jan https://youtube.com/shorts/zsAFkrzvi9s?si=YuIObmtQ...

The Baotain needed A LOT of tightening up and fixes. Its near complete

Tyres are last thing for me. I mentioned the tyre comment and half the group went out to buy dedicated rubber. I haven't yet...

I’d add a can of tyre foam and a small tow strap to that list of essentials, might make life a bit easier. Oh, and maybe a spare brake lever, those things are always the first to go.

It was slightly tongue in cheek. I did think that it would stand out if nothing else! It's a non-runner and I think they want too much for it at £395:

Cheers! 8th March travel up in 2 big 4x4s and a car trailer with all 8 peds strapped on, will then be finding the closest restaurant/pub followed by Saturday riding all day, hotel saturday night and home sunday

We have one videographer who typically does the work for the influencer going (who has zero motorbike experience)

About half of us will have gopro / gopro 360s strapped on. I need to get one of them deliciously tacky selfie sticks they bung on the bikes. Riding in a group and being able to see riders in front or behind crash will be worth the torture of knowing I have one of those on my bike
