Sold my Honda today and toying with the idea of getting an Italian bike at c. 10k budget.

Did an insurance policy price check for a second hand MV agusta Turismo (value £10k) and only got a single quote from the search at the princely sum of £3.5k .... so that's a no for practical purposes.

Living in zone 3 London, 42yrs old 6yrs NCB equal to the years i have the licence. Never had a bike stolen or made a claim.

Am I doing smth wrong?

It will be a combination of MV, London and a new to you bike. Take any of those away and the price will drop hundreds for each.

Well I've tested for a new MG Mandello V100 a bike of very similar value and insurance premium for that is £600ish.

Why would it be so much more punitive for MVA?

Assuming you have a garage, living in London (or a major city) is the main factor.

Then the specific model of bike. Value isn't that relevant unless we're talking £20k+

For me, an S1000R costs twice as much to insure as any other supernaked.

If you don't have a garage, you're going to struggle to get a quote. I was in Zone 5 with a garage for one bike and drive way with the other. One year my driveway bike went from £450 to £2.5k, a year later and it was essentially "no garage, no insurance".

I made a couple of calls today to clarify the situation and is very much garage but also brand driven.
Are MV Agustas targeted a lot more than other brands ? Possibly.. I am frustrated though because they don't seem to offer 3rd party only either. Even if I rent a garage it is still £1.1-1.4k even after I max out the voluntary and promise to do less than 3k miles. Very complicated.

Historically, MV and Guzzi are quite different market sectors.
I'm not surprised that Guzzi are seen as much lower risk.

Aren't MV parts notoriously expensive too? Wonder if city based claims for being knocked over in bike parks etc would make a difference?

What you want is a mint 1999 Ducati 996 BP with 2,800 miles on the clocks, oddles of history , books, Ducati single side swing arm stand, genuine dust cover and looking very, very near like new .. with a fresh set of belts , new tyres....and some change from 10k.

See how that works out insurance wise for you , if your interested let me know...

I had a 998s a few years back when I could justify two bikes and loved it. But bigger mortgage has taken the toll unfortunately, so one bike to do it all it is.

Not sure whether this generation would comply with ULEZ.

Insurers class inside the M25 as London and henc eeven in the suburbs premiums are crazy. looking at the history of bike thefts, uninsured riders, fast food/powder delivery riders everywhere it is easy to see why insurers have pulled out of this market.

Good luck with oyur search

I ve put down a deposit today for a slightly used Multistrada V2.

Fancy the MVs 3 pot soundtrack and uniqueness but the Multi has better electronics (6 axes IMU ABS), is well resolved, longer warranty.

I found it easier to get insurance for it too. A lot more insurance brokers provide for it. Premium is not cheap for it, mind.

No they don't. They rate by individual postcode. There will be postcodes inside the M25 which will be cheaper than some postcodes outside. There will be some London postcodes that'll be lower than others outside London. "London" is not a flat rate.

Sounds very, very high for an MV. Whilst in Z5 I had a new F3 and then modified it. Still have it and it is still harder to insure my Ducati.

For a £10k bike you will struggle to get 3rd party. One of the issues with MV is repair costs. Panels and parts are hard to come by and mega pricey.

But I wouldn't be leaving a premium bike on the street anywhere. In the end I garaged my Monster, as I needed it to go to work and refused to pay the fee for insurance.

My renewal for mid Feb is £140.

Went to the usual comparison sites and none could get within a hundred quid of my renewal quote.

The first time in 25 years of motoring that that's happened.

I tried to get insured on a 2017 fireblade and the cheapest quote was almost two grand..... Similar for an S1000R, KTM 1290R.

Yet a 1290GT/SA, Multistrada, S1000XR etc were all around £500.

M, 33, Licence held for 14 years, 9+ NCB. fking ridiculous

I saw a 2015 Triumph Explorer 1200 and thought oh hello this week. 3k insurance. Yet a BMW 1200....

Maybe in part it's owners who drop them?..

Could be. I assumed from the ones I looked at maybe more get dropped/crashed by younger riders? As in less younger people buy the GT/SA maybe?

I have an RC8, SDGT, and a 990 Adventure.

Insurance has been:
2021 - £900
2022 - £1400
Dec 2023 - £2600. Lol

Any bike quoted without multi-bike is £500-£600 each. But obviously I cant use my NCD on 3 separate policies.

It really is looking like a bit of a scam. So time to play the game little, and I'll now accrue multiple no claims bonuses. I got the 990 Adventure on a new policy with 0 no claims for £800, and will use the NCD for the GT in spring - around £500. RC8 hardly gets used but I'll check the T&Cs for "other bikes" or pay for the admin fees to swap.
