Whoops, no it's not a 675 - it's a 660 and will be based on the Tiger. So not a return to the old sports bike but the touring/commuter bike of now but with a sporty name......

A new 'Daytona' with 81 hp. Jesus, why didn't they just come up with a new name for it rather than blemish the heritage of the Daytona name. It's not as if the target buyers of this new bike are the same ones lusting after the golden days of proper 600 supersports bikes?
Guess I'll be sticking to my Daytona 675R a while longer then.

It just feels like a bike no one asked for to me.
The R7, Aprilia RS660 and the other Jap equivalents are all doing pretty well and Triumph have decided to make one so I'd say there's quite a few people asking for them. If there's demand, a 765 should be easy.
Take the Daytona name away and it looks like a decent, competitively priced bike.
I understand those with an affinity to the Daytona name feeling a little underwhelmed, but the comfy pseudo-sports bike is a growing category - I bought the CBR650R recently myself and would've definitely considered this and the Suzuki 8R had they been available last autumn.
Then again I'm selling the CBR so what do I know!

660cc means that Triumph can make a learner version for Australia and New Zealand.

This is where my thinking is.If there's demand, a 765 should be easy.
As others have said theyre claiming 93hp which means this will be A2 compliant which helps because they can essentially market to two different groups of people with one bike.
Sports bike fans should be happy that theyre making a fully faired bike again, in future it would be so easy for them to shove the 765 engine in drop the bars and raise the pegs and its the bike that everyone here wishes this one would be.

It's not the Trident motor so has 94hp, more torque and a higher redline. People get way to worked up over names as well. Has everyone forgotten that there has been more Daytonas than just the 675?
I was thinking this. To anyone into older Triumphs, the Daytona wasn't the quick one. The Bonneville was. The fast Daytonas were the BSA Goldstar Daytona to confuse things even more Derekm2104 said:
Seems the biggest thing holding it back is the name.
Be interested to see how it compares to the CBR650R.
I'd be interested if I'd changed my name to Alexandria and had just passed my DAS. The biggest thing holding it back for me isn't the name, its the fact its designed to be a DAS/first bike, totally uninspiring if you've a bike or two sat there and have been riding a while. Be interested to see how it compares to the CBR650R.

Reminds me of when Ford launched the 6th generation Mustang in 2015 and it came with the option of a 4 cylinder Ecoboost and the V8. Loads of people saying that any proper mustang should have a V8. I pointed out if you ignored the name you were left with a fast (relatively), attractive, practical, coupe that was arguably better value that similar offerings from Audi, BMW, etc. Many people get hung up on heritage and product names and cannot view the machine objectively. Be interested to see how it compares to the CBR650R.
