What's the best sounding engine from the last 5-10 years, inline 4, both around 600cc, and 1000cc?

Aftermarket cans are fine.

The 2.3L I4 Ecoboost.

But not when it's in a Mustang. Just no.

My 2019 S1000R with a full Arrow system on always got compliments on how well it sounded.

Ive had a few and listened to most but the H2 engine in all its guises sounds great as standard but with a full system and super charger chirping away as you go up and down the rev range, its a unique sound and very exciting.

My neighbour may not agree thou…

Agree with the R1/ MT10 crossplane engine, sounds different to all the other il4's.
Not modern, but this sounds hilarious

Got to be this. Mainly as it sounds more like a V4.

And the best sounding IL4 is....

...the one that sounds least like an IL4! hehe

I'll stick my nomination in for the 2023 M1000RR, The Wee Wizard Seeleys sounded incredible coming off the hairpin at Knockhill this year!

MV Agusta F4 1000S sounds good. Might be outside of the timelines stated in the OP...

To be honest 99% of IL4's sound st, and a noisy exhaust just reinforces this, it has to be the Yamaha CP4.

This. The best sounding IL4 IMO. Sounds very angry!

Mine of course! (Unmodded z900rs) But mainly cos it's the first IL4 I've ridden and therefore had my ears close up through the rev range biggrin

If we're limited to the IL4 layout, then it can only be the Yamaha CP4, simply because it doesn't sound like an IL4 in the first place but more like a odd angle V4. Lovely sound for such a crap bike hehe

I dunno

A small piece of st is just a bit stty.
But a massive pile of st is impressive in it’s own way.
