Just noticed this daunting EU proposal. Hardly news because it's three week old. Surprised not to find a previous thread on the topic. Maybe I just haven't searched hard enough.

Hope this isn't an indication of future trends, especially as UK motoring laws are still aligned with EU.

Usual foolishness, i rode a guzzi lm1000 from bedfordshire to budapest in 1987 the speed limit for cars was higher than for bikes on the hungarian motorway , so i was on a 140mph bike the locals were driving their lada’s , skoda’s and trabants .

Same way they police everything else. Cameras tied to databases.

When are we going to learn that safety doesn’t come first? Motorbikes are fun because they’re dangerous.
Danger is excellent.

I've long been of the opinion that speed limits for bikes should be HIGHER than for cars. If you're a good enough rider then all's well and if you're not then Darwin will sort it out.

Based on potential crash damage inflicted, previously I suggested that speed limits should relate to kinetic energy.

A limit of 1.0 MJ would give bikes plenty of latitude. Even 1,500kg car would be permitted 82mph.

Unfortunately my suggestion fell on stony ground. Probably will again frown

Intelligent Speed Adaptation will ensure you comply with speed limits.

There are multiple speed limits in force already; vans, lorries etc so it would be policed the same way (ie not at all judging by the local DHL vans hehe). This one would be far easier to spot as you only have to count the wheels.

Having said that, it won't happen anyway.

I don't think it will become law but it is not unknow for something that "everyone knows" is a daft idea to still become law because it's so daft nobody actually objected. The fact it's got as far as actually being a proposal in the EU parliament shows there are enough people out there who believe this will help. frown

As for policing, it's already easy, and getting easier and easier. Compulsory insurance type trackers, large penalties for tampering with the tracker or not having one, and the fines will just roll in. Enforcing laws, even stupid ones, is always easy when those you are enforcing them on have something to lose.

I guess that many bikers will still ride at 30 over whatever limit is imposed.

Italians treat all speed limits, traffic lights, warning signs and road makings as decorations, and ignore them.

It's not even linked to skill.

If you're travelling slightly faster than the general traffic you can concentrate mostly on what's in front of you. Riding at 65-70 on a the motorway is actually quite stressful and certainly more dangerous.

I don't think most people realise how rubbish bike mirrors are.

I’m not so sure.

Rewind twenty years and ask most people whether they think there would be a 20mph default limit in Wales, ridiculous “clean air zones” in a significant number of European cities, twice the number of traffic lights, cameras even on country roads and they’d have thought you were mad. Look what’s happened and I see no sign of the madness abating.

I think this will happen. Bikers always an easy, minority target and I dare say most people get annoyed seeing us “speeding everywhere” etc. and, of course, “it’s for our own good”.

Still a dangerous precedent.

Or maybe they do and want legislation to force bikes to have things like better mirrors, a roll cage and 2 extra wheels....

Bikes are an anomaly in today's safety obsessed culture. Completely at odds with Vision Zero. Makes me wonder how long they will be tolerated.

But any adverse legislation will be covert - death by a thousand cuts.
