Thruxton RS - views?
Discussion
Am strangely drawn to these - the reviews are good:

Any views?
Would you have one over something non-retro - like a Street Triple RS?
Could you do a track day on one...? (comes on Metz Racetec RR's?)
Or do you need to have at least a minor fondness for tweed to "get" it?

Big fan.
Had this from 2016 to 2019

Upgraded to the R with the ohlins and Showa big piston forks. Also with tail tidy and led indicators. Still have this.

Didn’t get an RS as there wasn’t enough of a difference and the final edition is just a paint job. But I have just added this to the collection. The TFC. Ohlins at the front, 10BHP more, and all carbon fibre. Waiting for it to be delivered. I think I have a problem

I really like them. Saw one at my local Triumph dealer while the Speed Triple was in for a service. I quite fancied a change so looked at the RS but found that they were as rare as hens teeth (with the fairing) & more money than I wanted to spend. I bought a BMW RnineT Racer instead which is in a similar mould albeit without the fancy suspension but the BMW copes well enough on the road (I’m sure it’d run out of ideas pushed hard on the track).

Would need a long test ride to be sure as they look really uncomfortable.
Thats the no1 thing people say to me when chatting about the bike, but its all relative, I find my 1200R perfectly comfortable, its less extreme than my other bike and your average sports bike, and mine has the lower clip ons, the higher ones are 2" taller and make it way more relaxed, but the low ones look cooler.
Had mine 4 years and still love it, prefer my R to the RS as I'm not keen on the more blacked out look and the limited colour options, although the ton up edition was rather nice.
I think it would cope fine on a trackday, would obviously be outgunned on longer straights but up to 3 figures its pretty quick and stable in the corners, would probably recommend better pads, taller gearing and a quickshifter, all of which mine has amongst others, never had it on track though.

Absolutely this. I find the knee bend angle no worse than my BMW R1250RS. The standard clip ons are well above the yoke and just nicely leant forward. I find the riding position more comfortable than the Speed Twin (which everyone buys now instead thinking it’s more comfortable but makes your butt ache and makes you a windsail. I have done a few hundred miles on the Speed twin. Also the suspension is nowhere near as good.)

The lower yokes on the cafe racer fairing are a bit more wristy, but no where near as extreme as the BMW R9T racer which is extreme. Although my TFC has had the the standard bars fitted.
Compared to something like a Ducati V2 etc the Thruxton is very comfortable. You can bimble around and enjoy the torque but if you want to it will reward a good thrash.

Reading some of the ridiculous comments on a youtube video about the demise of the Thruxton and the reasons why shows there are many misconceptions about the bike and the owners, mainly around the riding position, but also that its only good for short trips to the nearest coffee shop, and the speed twin is the logical sensible choice.
All rubbish of course, people assume mines a garage queen and I just spend my time constantly polishing (only partly true

Great choice buying the TFC, they are a rare sight, never seen one on the road, only in a showroom, and with them halting production maybe they'll all become future classics and hold their value, not sure about mine with the miles on it though.

The RnineT racer was my other option and I very nearly bought one before this Thruxton came back up for sale, I really enjoyed the test ride after initially getting used to the dry clutch and shaft drive, I think the rearsets were definitely higher than the Thruxton and not sure if the bars were lower but certainly felt more stretched out forwards.
sometimes wish I'd have gone for it as they sold even less than the Thruxton and are a very rare sight, weirdly I wanted one with alloy wheels though as i thought it suited the bike but everybody chose spokes and they were rare as hens teeth.
I have a real thing for these and put a deposit down on an RS in Kent couple years back (there's a thread somewhere on here about it). Test rode it and just thought for me... Not yet
That being said if I had spare cash (which I don't) I'd add to the garage just for the odd summer weekend ride
