If I wheel the bike backwards or forwards the bike clicks from the chain area.

If the bike is on the centre stand and I spin the wheel back and forth - nothing. Only happens when there's weight on the rear wheel?

No stiff links
Can't pull the chain back off the sprocket
Correct sag/tension in chain
No lateral play in the wheel/no wobble no noise from rear hub, no play in the cush rubber of the sprocket etc.

I've added some extra chain grease lubricant.

I've recently adjusted the chain (but see above). It appears level - no wobble and both sides seem to measure the same.

Could it be the chain lube?

Put the bike on the centre stand and then use a screwdriver, or similar, to lift/lower the chain above and below the swingarm to see if you can replicate it.
Possibly just the weight of the bike altering the swingarm angle/chain tension which makes it 'interfere' with something else e.g. chain guide/runner, sprocket cover etc.

“added some extra chain grease”

Was it on the dry side for some time before? It and the sprockets could be worn.

Id also double check the alingment and check the front sprocket is secure, either of those not correct or tight will make the chain run out of true and click as it tries to climb the sprocket.

I had a strange intermittent click a few times from the rear , visually everything ok, within I’d say 100 miles of commuting the fault escalated very quickly. A vibration was the next symptom, then abs light on. Result was the rear wheel bearing seizing up!

That's the thing it's smooth as spinning fwd and rearward.

The whole wheel was new last year.

One of the Old Gits had something similar some years ago while on a trip to the Alps. It turns out it was a rear disk retaining bolt that was working loose and was just catching on something fixed to the swing arm.

OK weird one (ad infinitum) so I loosened the chain and run it alot looser than usual. It's all better, no noise at all. Not even chain slap.
