Help selling a large quantity biking equipment for widow
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I've been tasked with selling a large quantity of biking gear for the widow of a biker who has recently passed away (non-biking related).
I'm not a biker, but a friend of the family, and would like to do the best by her financially.
The guy in question was quite well known on social media (100k plus followers etc) and had a good few sponsors that sent him nice stuff to try out - so there is a mountain of bits from helmets, boots, jackets, trousers, gloves, panniers etc from higher end brands.
Looking for any experience or potential leads if possible. Obviously ebay is an option but not sure if there are any bike shops etc that buy things like this (majority is used - some new)?
Mods - I would be appreciated if you can keep the topic up and can provide proof I am acting on behalf of the widow etc if required.
All the best,
Joe

Depends how much time you want to spend. I've not sold anything on ebay for a long time so unsure how quick/easy it is these days.
Facebook is a good place. There are loads of bike groups about. Normally local ones as well.
Google the main things to get an idea of a price and stick it up for around that.
I'd personally not mention the reason for selling as you'd probably get people trying to low ball you or think it's stolen and a sob story.

I think the best bang for buck would be for you to setup some ebay auctions and then ask the family to try to get the message to the follows of his socials channels. There are some very generous people who would have enjoyed the content and would like to contribute to the family by way of buying some items I am sure. Obviously this is not without some emotional pain for the family to do this but would probably help them the most financially in the long run.
Hi thanks for that,
As there is such a large amount of bits I don't think Facebook would be feasible for most of it as I'd forever be waiting in for people to collect or going to meet up etc but might work for some of the nicer stuff.
I wasn't planning on mentioning the reason for sale, but if I end up listing in all one place the family said they might want to link it to his Instagram etc - but I'll leave that decision to them.

Depending on the age/condition/type of gear you could perhaps get a stall at an autojumble or a bike show?
If the guy had that many followers online, you could advertise that the stuff has come from him which may help advertise and build confidence they're not knock-off, nicked or likely damaged!

Worth a go but you’ll obviously have van hire and stall costs. You may also need to think about card payment facility. If it then rains on the day you may not shift much.If the guy had that many followers online, you could advertise that the stuff has come from him which may help advertise and build confidence they're not knock-off, nicked or likely damaged!
You could also try selling high value items individually and bundle the other stuff for someone else to take off you and car boot themselves.
Whilst certain brands sell for good money a lot of stuff doesn't get much at all
If he had a large Instagram obviously the best way is to mention it on there giving the name of the ebay seller, then I'd list it on eBay which is by far the best marketplace - wait until they do an 80% off fees day, they've just done one so it will probably be two weeks
You will obviously get the most selling individual items but you could also do a few job lots
I've been selling my father's classic car collection for over a year now and all of the cheaper stuff I just gave to his mechanic because it's simply isn't worth my time selling cheaper items individually, with photographing, advertising and posting

An alternative to fleabay that seems to have grown loads is vinted - I've used it to buy a fair few things over the last 6 months including a new set of summer gloves. Prices are fair and as a seller you pay no fees - the buyer pays a % of price 'buyer protection' instead and shipping is (depending on what options you select) all set for you to drop off with evri or other courier of choice.
