IAM RoadSmart is arguing that airbag jackets should be VAT exempt: “This could be achieved by bringing air jackets in line with the zero per cent VAT rating on other items, such as helmets.” I’m pleased to see the IAM arguing for something sensible to help bikers.

Yes.
(and VAT on EV charging should be the same whether at home or on a public charger).

Never realised helmets were VAT exempt

Surely it should be expanded to include any CE rated safety equipment i.e most motorcycle clothing smile

The retailers probably add 20 percent to the non VAT price reckoning on no-one noticing.

Cynic! Moi?

Helmets are zero-rated for VAT, not VAT exempt.

Sorry accountant mode off.

The difference between a helmet and jacket being helmets are compulsory jackets aren’t. Not saying I don’t think jackets should be zero rated but I can’t see it happening on those grounds.

I think that, as all biking kit has to be CE rated thus is viewed as PPE it should all be rated 0% for VAT!

ETA link to Gov. site about PPE being zero rated

Wasn't VAT originally a luxury tax that now seems to be levied on virtually everything, including necessities.

Sanitary products are now zero-rated for VAT.

Leaving the EU allowed the UK Government to do as the UK population wanted them to do.

Not quite true, we could only do it sooner than the EU does it. Annex III was amended in 2021 to permit countries to apply reduced rates to a number of things, including female sanitary products but also things like bicycles, both man powered and electric, which UK consumers will still be charged VAT on.

There is never a positive side to Brexit, just a little bit of polish on the turd of lies !

Annex iii is still resticitive and doesn't include lower rates on more critical items such as home fuels etc....EU still has lower cap of 5%. Always nice to be governed by an unelected body but many still seem keen.

maybe but…

a certain manufactures’ s duopoly on repairs and reinflation needs to end, a way of cleaning it properly and not relying on artificial products to mask the smell needs to be found and the cost of service/reinflation needs to be addressed

two/three pops and it’s the cost of a new one which can easily happen In a TD season

France has a rate of 5.5% for electricity for homes and business whereas the UK VAT rate for business is 20% still.

There are no benefits to Brexit, not one. And we had elected representatives. We elected MEPs. Other member states helped grow the EU market for UK goods and services and we carried on paying less than our fair share for the expansion, despite benefiting more than almost any other state other than Germany and arguably France and Italy.

Brexit was a smelly turd of a lie that people keep trying to polish but it's still a turd, it will never disappear regardless of how many more lies are told and how much it's polished.
